I am just wondering about the following: What means the enable MMCSS function you can select in the Yamaha Steinberg FW driver popup screen? What is that function doing or not doing? Jan |

The Multimedia Class Scheduler Service (MMCSS) enables multimedia applications to ensure that their time-sensitive processing receives prioritized access to CPU resources. This service enables multimedia applications to utilize as much of the CPU as possible without denying CPU resources to lower-priority applications. |

OK. But, what does it for the FW driver connection? Do I have to check it on or off? with respect to the Steinberg driver. I ask this, because I had set it on in the past and I experienced while I was playing an MP3 file from the mo-song forum, that the song stopped half-way. That phenomenon did not happen in the past. However, I do not remember whether I set this MMCSS on or off in the past. Is this problem related with this MMCSS setting or not? Jan PS I will set it off and see whether playing a MP3 from the mo-song does play or stopped again half-way. LOL. |

OK. After not setting this MMCSS on I could play the mo-forum MP3 songs without stopping halfway. Set I this MMCSS On, it stops halfway. So, I have to set it off. I think Jan |

What MP3 player are you using? And are you playing back through your mLAN16e2 audio card, or your PC sound card? With MMCSS selected, it is supposed to prioritize audio driver priority, but perhaps you’re competing with your GPU and system resources and causing contention. MMCSS is on by default and is a good thing for DAW performance, generally. |

Tbone, I use Windows Media Player for playing MP3 files from my PC or from Internet and using Soundmax on my ASUS board. I am not using my mLAN16E2 of my XS8 for playing songs from my PC. mLAN16E2 I only use with my DAW, Cubase 5 and the N12 and XS8. Jan |

Interesting behaviour, as it is just the opposite of what MMCSS was intended to resolve. Glitch free audio. Is it just one file, or any MP3 you try from your local HDD. This service has been blamed for poor networking performance while multimedia was playing and Vista SP1 apparently could throttle an index value for this MMCSS Service to balance Network performance and audio/video playback. Your profile suggests you’re running XP, so I wonder if there is a similar config item for this tweak. If you stop Internet surfing, does it improve the situation? |

In which case, you may want to review this blog and consider tweaking the MMCSS Service index. Your issue exhibits some similarities. http://blogs.technet.com/markrussinovich/archive/2007/08/27/1833290.aspx There are quite a few references but Mark has done a thorough job of documenting his use case and test criteria.
Here’s Microsoft’s KB article on the issue.

Tbone, I really appreciate all the efforts you have made to help me out, but that stuff on those both links are going way above my head. I admit. I am too dumm to understand what those links are about. So for the moment I do not set that MMCSS on while I am on the internet. I will set it on when I am in Cubase and using FW driver. Jan |
