Greetings Guru’s: I have a couple of questions pertaining to recording (saving in .wav, etc, formats) from XS8 to computer. I’ve downloaded and installed all updated drivers, OS, etc., for PC and XS. Everyting seems to be communicating beautifully via assigned ports etc. I can sync a voice, pattern, or song onto Studio Manager and effectively use the EQ and save it as an .xoe file for later use in the EQ. But I have some questions. Q1: How can I save songs and patterns as a .wav file? Or how to use put the song on cubase so that I can manipulate the cubase track effects? Q2: How can I record directly to the computer (cubase) other than one voice at a time (e.g. using direct recording in Performance mode from XS)? I’ve read the XS, Studio Manager, and Cubase manuals and watched some “intro” videos of the same, but there’s nothing clear. One XS video talks about ‘bulk’ dumping from XS to Cubase that then puts an ‘XS song’ option in the ‘Import’ option menu for recalling into the cubase track window. I dumped the song from the XS to cubase, but there isn’t an ‘XS song’ option for importing. Thanks, KT |

Unfortunately you have not provided us with any information to specifically help you. You know what you downloaded and installed (we don’t)… In general, you can transfer your Motif XS Songs and/or Patterns as a .wav file in a number of ways:
1: Resample - the process of recording the data to sample RAM. Requires you expand your Motif XS with DIMMs - please see page 295 of your Owner’s manual for details.
2: Audio Record to USB drive - in the latest operating system of the Motif XS you are able to record your Sequence data as a .wav file directly to a USB drive. For details on how this works please see this Support article: New Functions in the Motif XS 3: Record Audio to Cubase - you do not mention which Motif XS you have or if you have the mLAN16E2 firewire option (built-in on the XS8, optional for the XS6 and 7). If you do or if you have an external audio interface, you can route the audio output of your Motif XS PARTS to audio outputs and direct them to AUDIO Tracks in Cubase. Let us know what you have… |

I have a Motif XS8 with 512MB DIMMS. I’m connected to computer via USB cable and have a yamaha formatted 2G flash drive (though I’d rather not use the latter if I can use the USB cable instead). Please let me know my options and how to proceed. KT |

You need a firewire connection to transfer audio |

The USB TO HOST connection - the one between the Motif XS and the computer is for MIDI data only. The USB TO DEVICE connection - the one between the Motif XS and a USB drive can be used to record audio data (as well as save Back Up files). In addition to the articles I referenced in my previous post you will want to read this: |

Lots of great info guys, thanks. I went to Best Buy and they only had 6’ and 6.5’ firewire (I need a 10’). So I went online to ‘monoprice.com’ and they have longer cords. What I also wasn’t aware of was the number of pins for the cable. The XS manual states it has two 6-pin IEEE-1394 ports. My computer has a 6-pin so I’ll have to order a longer cable online. Thanks for your assistance and I’ll write if it doesn’t work out. KT |

I’m back. I have the firewire and I followed the instructions in Motif XS / Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver / Windows Setup Guide. Unfortunately, I don’t have a Yamaha Steinberg FW icon in my control panel. In step four below, am I suppose to ensure that the “auto load” option is set to ‘on’? Or leave it ‘off’. It doesn’t say. Also, the only option in the IEEE1394 Driver window is ‘mLan.’ No FW option.
Press [UTILITY]
What do I do now? KT |

You do not have the Yamaha Steinberg FW driver that is why you do not see the icon in your Control Panel. You cannot complete the tutorial - so you must stop and go download the data you need for your Motif XS. In step four you are just to ensure that you Motif XS will automatically load the IEEE1394 Driver preference of FW. You do not have to turn AUTO LOAD ON (nothing instructs you to do that), the IEEE1394 Driver = FW option just happens to be on the same screen. You do not have the downloaded materials you require. It sounds like you have not updated your Motif XS.
To verify your version:
If you do not have 1.55.xx you need to go to the following site and download the updater: http://www.yamahasynth.com/downloads/drivers_software/synthesizers/motif_xs/updater/ The updater download - includes the file, which you must unzip and place on a USB drive and it comes with a VERY IMPORTANT Readme file - please feel free to read it (lol) it includes all the instructions on how to proceed with the update and how to reset your unit after the update. Please save all your important data before you update - you should always save your important data as soon and as often as you are creative… this way you don’t have to cry about the stuff you lost. It is, simply, a wise thing to do. |

FYI I’ve updated my OS Motif XS8 to version 1.55.11. It was the first thing I did after I bought it. Is there a newer version??????????????? lol Am I still supposed to download and install the Yamaha Steinberg FW driver? Why are there notes everywhere telling me that • The MOTIF XS8 is equipped with the mLAN16E2 as standard? Does this suggest that I don’t need to install the FW driver? I’ve downloaded both the Yamaha Steinberg FW driver and the IEEE1394 Firmware updater ver 1.07. Should I install them? KT |

Update, I’ve installed the Yam Stein FW driver and the firmware update; all seems well. I’ll read some more and test out for recording.
Thanks,
