Greetings all!

I haven’t posted to this forum in months because I no longer have my ES7, however I do have a general computer question regarding Cubase SE. I apologize if this is the wrong forum.

My computer consists of a 2.1 Athlon CPU with 1 Gig of RAM, and a Delta 1010 audio interface attached. Is this enough computing power to simultaneously record about 8-9 tracks in Cubase SE? I have Cubase set to NOT render the wave forms on the fly. They are constructed when I stop recording. My goal is to record a combo for demo purposes only. I do intend to buy some reasonable quality mic pre-amps. I would use the Delta 1010 for the line level stuff.

Again, if this is the wrong place for this question, I apologize, but I’m still a member and thought some would recognize my name. Thanks again. :-0

P.S. I sometimes use my Tyros II as a mic pre-amp. It works amazingly well!

Hi Lee,
Good to hear from you again, and I hope all is well in your world.
Re. your question, I would definitely recommend that you consider a major update to everything before wasting time trying to record those 8 tracks. There’s a good chance, if they are short, that you can get away with it, but even back in the days of LE, which has been obsolete for a very long time, 1 GB RAM was the bare minimum. If there are not other means available to you, you could certainly try it and see how far you get, but if you later try adding in effects etc., you may indeed bring everything to a halt. So in brief, while you might have some success, I would still suggest that you are WAY overdue for an upgrade to newer and more powerful equipment. All the best....................frank

Hey Frank! Thanks for the quick reply. It is indeed good to hear your voice again, so to speak :-)

I figured as much. I’ve been doing some session work in a few pro studios lately, and these guys are using 8 core processors (dual 4-core), with about 10 gigs of RAM, dual monitors and Nuendo. I know that my gear has dinosaur poo on it as does my software. Perhaps I’ll do some thinking about this. Once the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) has been met or exceeded, I’ll post some questions as to what to buy. I should live that long!

Thanks again....Lee

Lee,

great to hear from you again.

Frank is absolutely right.
Of course the question is what OS are you running - To update everything may well require a new PC base unit and that will then take you into Windows 7 territory or even Vista!!
If your old machine is XP then you may well find a new spangly machine won’t run your old software!

So a high WAF may well be gained by adding all this cost up and then showing her the alternative cost of just upgrading the RAM from 1 to 2Gb which may well be all you would need to do if your other requirements are relatively modest.

Its just a thought - but alas the industry moves on at a very hearty pace indeed.

Cheers

Hi Wellie! I hope you are well. Thanks for chiming in. I would have responded sooner but I’ve been very busy.

I know that it’s probably high time to move up. I am using XP Pro and it works well with the current gear, but as Frank mentioned, I’m very limited in how many tracks and effects I can add.

I’m also in the process of re-assessing my musical direction. I really enjoy the session work and am finding the stage work to be wearing a little thin. On the other hand, it pays bills (LOL).

Thanks again to you and Frank for the great advice. I’ll bug you guys again sometime in the future. Best.....
