Hi,
I am considering buying a Motif XS, however I see that Yamaha has about a 3-4 year cycle in updating the Motif range, so it would be a shame to buy one then a new version to come out.. does anyone know what is in the pipeline?

Edit: Motif XS is now 3 years old see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motif_XS

Don’t worry about tomorrow get the XS today! Why would Yamaha come out with something new now when so many are with out a JOB.  We will see something new between 9-2011 and 4-2012.

1. This will ALWAYS happen, it’s just a matter of time.

2. How long can you wait if you don’t know if and when a new Motif will be released? How long do you want to wailt?

3. Your question implies that “new” equals “better”. That’s not always the case. New products may have problems at the beginning that need months and many updates to be solved. Also, new products may come with lost functionality (e.g., no expansion boards, no piano roll, ...).

I know, it’s a hard decision involving a lot of uncertainty and money, good luck! :)

darelc, do you want to have a good instrument,
do you want to play
or do you just want to be the first on your block to have it.
(read “An Englishman in New York” by Godley and Creme).

darelc,
Nowadays older japanese equipment is better and more reliable then new one as we experiencing this on the car market right now so even if it were already new motif out there I’d still chose XS. Unless you want to wait for yamaha recall…

Hi guys,

Of course you are all correct :)

I was really playing the devil’s advocate a little bit. I own quite alot of Yamaha hardware, and the quality has always been top notch and they are still valid instruments today. (I have FS1R (always had a weakspot for FM), AN1x, CS2x, Dx7 and more ..)

I pick equipment solely based on sound, so it’s not about having the latest greatest, just having the best sounds, I want to play, but 26,000SEK is a big outlay for me (well for most people) so I just want to be sure that I am doing the right thing. I could have gone for a fantom G but to me it sounds a bit too cheesy, nice interface though.

I like the comparisons to Toyota’s troubles.

But anyway thanks for confirming what I was thinking. I look forward to getting to grips with this beast.

No problems with swedish customs/tax etc since it is shipped from the UK.

Buy some DIMM’s aswell…
