I have motif es8 and digital performer…

The first issue is I was working on keybord today and I am hearing a popping sound when notes are played and released - the pop comes as the key comes back up after being played....it’s funny because it doesn’t record the note on DP...so when recoring the pop isn’t there...it sounds almost like a little percusion sounding pop?

Also...I was able to setup midi to work with DP…

I go to SONG then Mixing then then Voice… I get to that...I can also change the sounds...but I have limited use of the motif so a few htings..

1. How do I save once I setup the 16 channels exactly how I want to use them from now on

2. Is there a tutorial anywhere on how to setup the sounds, and what the sound bank number is...can’t find my manual so try to find it on-line…

3. Does anyone have an idea what the popping noicse is and how to get rid of…

\
Thanks so mcuh!

Kevin

Okay, as you can see we have moved your post to the Motif ES forum. The Motifator site supports several different keyboards: Motif (Classic), Motif ES, Motif XS and others… so posting in the right heading is important… as you will find others that share the same issues.

Welcome to the forums. We assume you are saying that the “popping” sound is unusual and not expected, nor wanted. It would be difficult to say what its cause is without a bit more information about your setup… we gather you are connected to a computer and are using some kind of method to get MIDI data from the ES to the computer and back, yet you give no details about that setup.

For example, are you using the Motif ES USB connection?
If yes, when you disconnect that connection, do you still get the popping sound?
If no, then how are you connected to the computer?
If you disconnect that connection, do you still get the popping sound?
Do you have PLG boards installed in your Motif ES?

Are you working with Local Control = OFF?
Local Control is responsible for how the MIDI data generated by the Motif ES keybed initially travels. If local control is ON, then when you press a key the MIDI information travels directly to the Motif ES tone generator and it travels out via MIDI. This is how the Motif ES is normally setup…

This could be a problem if you have LOCAL CONTROL = ON and are recording to DP. When the MIDI data arrives in DP, it is ‘echoed back’ to the Motif ES on the MIDI channel as setup on the currently selected track in your DAW (DP). So you could be playing a piano and hearing both a piano and another sound.

So typically when working with an external DAW, you work with Local Control = OFF. Now the key presses of the Motif ES generate MIDI data that goes OUT via MIDI first (there is no ‘local’ connection between the keybed and the tone generator). The notes go to the DAW (Digital Performer) first, they are echoed back to the Motif ES on the MIDI channel as designated by the currently active track in your DAW! So this would avoid any doubling of note data.

Press [UTILITY]
Press [F5] MIDI
Press [SF2] SWITCH
Set Local Control = OFF
Again this will disconnect the Motif ES keyboard from the Motif ES tone generator. All MIDI data will go to DP first, where you must route it back to the Motif ES on a specific MIDI channel determined by the currently selected TRACK in DP.

When you have created a SONG MIXING setup with 16 PARTS you can STORE that data in the Motif ES by pressing the [STORE] button. You must back this up to a USB drive in an ALL data file (.W7A) or in an ALL SONG file (.W7S).

Alternative methods would include using the Yamaha Studio Manager with the Multi-Part Editor… this software solution will capture your current Motif ES MIXING setup, and the VOICE Library that you used and keep it in a nice neat file that you can keep in the same folder as your Digital Performer project. It can restore every setting when next you want to open this project.

OK… thanks a ton!

YIKES, I have a lot to learn, but its so great to have this forum, I am incredibly grateful!

The popping noise was DP! I had the “test setup” button pressed in DP… popping is gone…

Thanks for the advice on saving....

I have a few more questions… if it’s OK, I will continue asking questions on this thread....if you ever need me to start a new thread please let me know…

More Midi - OK DP and Motif are communicating fine… I see where I can select 1-16 channels on DP for the midi of Motif… I see when I record the info is showing up and I am hearing the different channels I select for the different channels of midi…

The main thing I would like to learn about first is how to locate and use the sound of the keyboard for each channel..and change them to my preferences and save....

In other words - take pre-recorded mid (from midi-hits on-line) and use the Motif sounds
for up to 16 channel then mix down to an MP3 to be used as a backing track...I have a good handle on DP and my mixing board… I ahve DP through Power Mac, Mackie Analog mixing board 32 by 8 Motfi es 8, Motu 828 as interface, and Boss Dr-880 as additional drum machine, although I think I would like to try to use Motif drums sounds mostly…

I see where I can go to SONG - > MIXING ---> VOICE

In VOICE it shows the 1-16 channels and I know how to scroll through and see how to change sounds…

Questions…

1. Under voice number I see only 128 choices - I would like to have access to ALL the sounds on the keyboard for each channel.... is this possible?  or can I only use the GM sounds on Motif....

2. I notice below voice is Bank MSG and Bank LSB can also change the sounds but I don’t really understand the details of how this works… it looks like they only change together… and it’s not making sense to me…

3. If you can answer the 2 questions above, then I wanted more info if possible on saving...I SAVE by use STORE?  and I am assuming it’s saved as basically a song?

4. Using the USB to save settings with my computer...I have the midi for the yamaha setup using midi in outs to 828 which works great…

However...I also have the USB right into the tower as well…

I download Yamaha Studio Manager, but I am lost as to how to use it…

When I open it up - Modify Workspace it asks to add device, but nothing shows up in device editor (it’s blank so I can’t add anything).... could this mean that my USB is not working because it’s not recognizing it - I do have it plugged into a powered hub because I ran out of USB slot.....

5. When I go back to volume / pan I see the 16 channels and levels...should I assume that this is directly the levels and pan of the VOICES - sorry if this a simple questions, I am assuming it is but just want to make sure…

I don’t run in stereo so I am assuming all volume at Uinity and pan should be right in the middle for each track....

Thanks so much for your continued help… once again, let me know if I need to seperate the threads depending on questions, or if we can continue

1. Under voice number I see only 128 choices - I would like to have access to ALL the sounds on the keyboard for each channel.... is this possible?  or can I only use the GM sounds on Motif....

You can use any of the sounds in the Motif ES. There are a maximum of 128 sounds in a Bank. In order to see other banks you simply need to select them.

You will want to refer to your Owner’s Manual (as it is really quite good on the basic stuff like this) Go to page 102 - it goes over specifically what you ask… how to select Voices for the different PARTS - and how to select the Banks.

If you are playing MIDI files created by someone else, then they probably placed Program Change events in the track data. It would be wise for you to learn about your Motif ES and its Event List - so you can edit the data. Otherwise, if the author selected sounds from the GM bank, it will cause your Motif ES to select sounds from the GM bank. That is what Bank Select and Program Change messages do: they change the sound to the sound selected by its author. You can re-write that data so it selects the sounds that YOU want to select.

2. I notice below voice is Bank MSG and Bank LSB can also change the sounds but I don’t really understand the details of how this works… it looks like they only change together… and it’s not making sense to me…

in the Motif ES SUPPORT area find the following article on Motif ES Bank Select and Program Change

If you get stuck post your question back here in this thread.

3. If you can answer the 2 questions above, then I wanted more info if possible on saving...I SAVE by use STORE?  and I am assuming it’s saved as basically a song?

Save and Store are two different concepts and are very important to understand.

[STORE] is a dedicated button. And what it does is write the data to current RAM location. When you have made changes to a sound (VOICE) or to the MIXING setup you must press [STORE] to document that change. Any time you change data a small inverse video letter “E” will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. This denotes that the current data has been changed since the last STORE operation. If you do not STORE before moving away your edit will be lost.

SAVE is not a button, per se, but what you do when you back up your data to a USB drive or SmartMedia card. When you go to FILE you can select the SAVE option. What gets “saved” to the file is the STORED data as it is in your Motif ES.

For example, any data that is recorded in the Motif ES sequencer will disappear when you power down. You will want to STORE the data, then SAVE it to a USB drive or SmartMedia card for long term backup… SAVE is the opposite of LOAD. When you wish to restore data - you LOAD if from your USB drive or SmartMedia card.

Until you read through and study the manual, the safest type of file to create is an ALL data file. ALL data files will have the extension .W7A, and literally will SAVE all the data as it is currently in your Motif ES (that is, all the STORED data).

Downloading Studio Manager is a start. Studio Manager is a host application. It can host editors for you Yamaha hardware… if you own a Yamaha digital mixer like the 01X or the 01V96 or 02R96, or if you own an effect processor like SPX2000, or a synthesizer like the Motif ES, or Motif-Rack ES, etc. each of these devices would have a separate EDITOR. The Studio Manager literally manages the hardware of your studio. It is a Host Application - which means it is a launch pad for the various hardware Editors.

If nothing shows up, then you did not download the Motif ES Editors (there is Motif ES MULTI-PART Editor that deals with MIXING setups, and there is Motif ES VOICE Editor that deals with Normal User Voices and User Drum Kits)

You don’t run in stereo? We have a repo squad that will be visiting your house and will reclaim the Motif ES and give it to some musician who appreciates how much better stereo is than mono… :^)

What do you mean you don’t run in stereo! Do you own an iPOD? do you run that in stereo? Do you have a hifi system in your house? do you run that in stereo? Do you have a big screen TV? Isn’t that stereo? Your car have a radio? Isn’t that stereo?

So you mean the only time you are not running in stereo is when you are making music yourself? Yikes… The repo squad is on its way to repossess your Motif ES!!!!

:-) Get serious - Stereo a sound standard since 1957!

Thanks so much for the quick response, that is all such useful information....I have had this keyboard for a while but just finally getting to the point where I can use it…

As far as stereo, yes ,stereo is better...I guess should have elaborated on the mono stereo situation… I’m a musician that uses backing tracks in my setup. My live PA setup years ago was mono so I ran everything mono...the tracks were setup more for to add a little beat and bass (I’m a guitar player and singer)… since it has worked for me for so long, I guess that is just what I got used to…

But I appreciate very much where you are coming from and maybe this a good time for a kick in the head!

I am going to re-listen and rethink the tracks that I have… now that I think of it, in the mix down I did use some panning in, but this is something I need to put some thought into…

So thanks....

The timing is good as I am just about to dive into the motif, recording, and I have a brand new PA setup which i believe can be easily run in stereo…

so if I at least try, will you not come over and take back my Motif?  :o)

Maybe the next question should be - (maybe this should have been the first)...what is the best way to learn the keyboards functions...would video be better? is there a place to download video tutorials on Motif where I can fill in some of the holes and learn how to use it properly… the manual helps and I will follow your advice above, but I think having a video tutorial would help a ton....

One of problems I have is that I know some stuff really well and other stuff I don’t anything....it’s those holes that stop me from moving forward and doing the things I want to do…

I will try your suggestions and will follow up....

Continued thanks!

Kevin
