Everytime I make any type of change (eq, effects, etc.) they never save. When I switch to another sound and then switch back, the changes that I made are now back to default. Also I wonder why they have the drums on midi channel 1 all the time. Even when I choose the Layer tracks 1-4 option, there are always drums playing in my layers… I need help. thanks |

That is correct, if you want to STORE your changes you have to go to EDIT on the menu bar and select STORE VOICE… or you can right click and select STORE VOICE… if the EDITOR is “ONLINE” when you do this you are also writing this to the location in the Motif-Rack XS itself. When you select STORE VOICE… you will be offered an opportunity to rename the VOICE and store it to one of the USER bank locations (of your choice). If you are working on a MULTI, and you make a change you will want to STORE MIXING - this will store the data to the current hardware location, only.
note: You can store the edited Multi also by selecting [Store Mixing] under [Edit] in the menu bar. Note that this
The current Multi setup as far as the EDITOR is concerned is saved when you SAVE a Motif-Rack XS Editor file (.X1E)
Drums can be placed in any PART you want. If you are playing some of the MULTI LAYERS that are provided as setups to learn from… you are free to edit and change these as you desire (making sure you STORE the changes so that they remain in memory). When you place the “LAYER 1-4PARTS” = ON incoming MIDI data on the Rack XS’s Basic MIDI Receive channel (typically 1) will trigger the four PARTS. (Please see page 40 in the Owner’s Manual for details on playing these setups). These setups are like the PERFORMANCE mode in the Motif XS keyboard, where an arpeggio is assigned to play a drum groove, another arpeggio is assigned to play a bass line, and perhaps another arpeggio is assigned to play guitar… it can vary according to which one you are playing. If you don’t want to use these you should feel free to INITIALIZE the MULTI and create your own setups - that is the whole idea. The ones that come in the Rack XS are only there for you to learn what is possible… please edit them, overwrite them, change them, Initialize them as you wish - it is now your Motif-Rack XS. If you want them back at some point later, not to worry, they are backed up in the Motif-Rack XS Editor and can be restored by doing a Factory Set (reset). |

ok thanks mister. 1 more thing. what is this I keep reading about if you don’t have your settings right that you saved sounds etc… can be overwritten when you connect the computer to the rack xs? also I can’t figure out how to create my own sound from scratch.. i know that a voice can be made up of up to 8 elements (waves), but I can’t find where to go and take a blank (initialized) patch and adding the elements that I want to be added… (i would like to do this with the editor if possible., but if you can help me learn how to do it with the rack and with the editor.) thanks |

i found it in the editor, (you go to the edit menu (on the side) then you go to oscillator pitch. the 8 elements are done in the top section under OSC. the element group (you have 8 of them) are on the far right of that first section. right? now how do I do it on the rack itself? |

never mind that’s wrong… how do you access the 8 elements so you can add 8 different 8 waves to a sound. ? |

i found it now for sure (for the editor). You do go to the same screen as I said before, and the waves are in the first section (as I said before). the only part I had wrong was how you select the 8 different waves (elements). you do that by choosing element 1,2,3,etc… under the element section then you make the changes to that specific element from there. i hope this helps someone else. it took me forever to figure it out...(even using the manual) |

but I do still need to know how to access this from within the XS rack (just in case I’m not in front of the computer...) and how to make sure my changes don’t get overwritten when I plug in the rack and sync it with the computer. |

You can’t access elements from the racks front panel, only the editor |

also… any time I choose store voice, it tries to make me store it to the user bank. I am trying to go through and increase the volume of each voice mode patch. (I want it maxed out at 127… not 100 and 95 as some are) There is no need to use a user slot just to increase volume. I would like to save it to the preset slot. Is this possible? if so how? |

Preset - definition: Permanent, fixed, as in previously setup by the engineers at Yamaha. Also these are in ROM, or READ ONLY MEMORY - means you cannot permanently change these in their current locations, they are pre-set. User - definition: That’s YOU, the user. As in, you purchased the Motif-Rack XS so you could use it. User memory is RAM or RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY - means that YOU, the user, can store the changed values here.

I was simply referencing the bolded statement above that YOU made. I apologize for my ignorance. I do know what presets are user patches are. But just so you know, on the KORG TRITON, you can edit the preset sounds and store them to the preset slots. |

I wasn’t talking about the Korg… I was talking about the Motif-Rack XS so apparently you did not know that you cannot store data to the PRESETS of the Motif Rack XS - so I made the statement. It was fairly obvious to me that you did not know this. Hope it was helpful, not trying to be anything but helpful. |
