Hi,

First time poster here.

very similar issue as these posters:
http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/442068/
http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/447195/

Heres the short of it.

Using Mac book pro, Logic 8, Motif ES 6

Have the latest updated USB driver, and OS.

I have been through the manuals and these forums, and it seems that quite a few other people are having the same issue.

USB connection is made, but I am unable to use any studio manager features (voice editor, sq) due to time out error. My routing is all in accordance with Bad Mister’s recommendations in the above posts, but I still only get time out errors.

ALSO, when I use the USB to connect with Logic, I am unable to use all of the transport functions. Play control makes a small unending loop that I have to reboot to stop.

I have seen that some of the posters with these issues have not received responses. I hope I am not one.

My sense is that it is an issue with the new driver, because previous drivers have worked (at least in Logic).

I also wonder if there is a work around for this issue with an out board midi interface?

Thank you

Welcome to the forums…

Well, let’s eliminate Logic from the equation and see if you can communicate between your Motif ES and the Studio Manager without Logic running. This will tell us whether or not the problem is with the combination or not. Make sense?

On your Mac, go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES > find the “Yamaha USB-MIDI” icon > click it verify version Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver V1.2.1

Boot Studio Manager V2.3.2
(by the way, saying that you “have the latest” is really meaningless information in this type of support situation, because you might as well write “I think I have the latest version” or simply don’t write anything… same thing. Not trying to be harsh, I’m just trying to impress upon you how helpful it is for those attempting to help you to verify the version you are working with (we have some people who, for whatever reason, NEVER update anything and take a firm stand on that point - it helps to know that you are not one of those people). If I was there, looking at your computer and ES, I’d quickly check - it takes a second or two, but really helps. So allow me to check. It’s always appreciated). And while we are at it, it helps to know the version of firmware in your Motif ES:

How to check the version of your MOTIF ES
Power on the unit while holding down the [REC] and [STORE] buttons simultaneously. The following message will appear:
“Current Version Kernel :  1.xx
Firm :  1.xx “
The unit’s version is indicated by “Firm :  1.xx “

1.08 is the latest… Press [EXIT] as indicated to return to normal bootup.

On the Motif ES
Go to [UTILITY]
Press [F5] MIDI
Press [SF4] OTHER
Make sure MIDI IN/OUT = USB
Press [SF2 SWITCH
Make sure RCV BULK = ON (not Protect).
Press [VOICE] to go to VOICE mode.

Back to STUDIO MANAGER:
Under SM2 select PREFERENCES
In the “MODIFY WORKSPACE” tab [ADD>] “Motif ES6/7/8 (Voice)” and “Motif ES6/7/8 (Multi)” to the WORKSPACE
Mark “Set Default”
Click “APPLY”

Select the “MIDI SETTINGS” tab
On the MIDI PORTS > INPUT PORTS side check “Yamaha Motif ES Port 1”
Same on the OUTPUT PORTS side “Yamaha Motif ES Port 1”
Click “APPLY”

Select the “Preferences” tab - set Studio Manager Prefereces to “Automatically synchronize on file load”
Click APPLY
Click OK

VOICE Editor
Double click on the VOICE icon to launch the VOICE Editor.
Go to HELP > ABOUT > verify Version 2.2.0
Go to SETUP > SETUP… or click the third icon to view the Editors MIDI setup page

Set the “MIDI In Port” = Yamaha Motif ES Port 1
Set the “MIDI Out Port” = Yamaha Motif ES Port 1
Channel 1 = to match the Basic MIDI receive Channel of your ES.
Device No. = 1
Bulk Interval = 0ms (raise as necessary) This is the time between sending bulk dumps of the individual Voices
Dial Mouse Control = your preference
Click OK

Now you can attempt to Transmit (fourth icon) or Receive (fifth icon); or you can go to SETUP > Transmit VOICE Bulk or Receive VOICE Bulk; or you can use COMMAND + T or COMMAND + R; to activate the transfers.

Attempt to RECEIVE a VOICE bulk from the ES.
Select: “Normal User 1 + 2 + Drum User”
Click START
It should take approximately 50sec to receive the data.

If you get a BULK Time Out Error:
1) check your USB cable connection
2) eliminate any hub; connect directly to the computer
3) try again at the same settings.
4) increment the BULK INTERVAL to 5ms (this will increase the amount of time between bulk requests, if your computer is not handling the data stream)
5) verify that your computer is not overly busy with other tasks
6) Attempt to RECEIVE just “Normal User 1”

Open the Multi-Part Editor
Go to HELP > ABOUT > verify Version 2.2.0
Go to SETUP > SETUP… or click the third icon to view the Editors MIDI setup page
Set the “MIDI IN REMOTE PORT” = NOT ASSIGNED
Set the “MIDI OUT REMOTE PORT” = NOT ASSIGNED

Set the “MIDI In Port” = Yamaha Motif ES Port 1
Set the “MIDI Out Port” = Yamaha Motif ES Port 1

Channel 1 = to match the Basic MIDI receive Channel of your ES.
Device No. = 1
Bulk Interval = 0ms (raise as necessary) This is the time between sending bulk dumps of the individual Voices
Dial Mouse Control = your preference
Click OK

On the Motif ES, place the instrument in SONG mode (or PATTERN mode) - these are your MULTI-PART modes.

On the Editor go to SETUP and attempt to RECEIVE a MULTI BULK - this will take 1sec. The Editor will indicate the VOICES assigned to each of the 16 PARTS and indicate all the MIXING mode settings (faders, pan position, EFF Sends, etc., etc.)

Also under SETUP, you will find the “RECEIVE VOICE BULK” command (same as in the VOICE Editor) this is how the Multi-Part Editor “knows” what Voice Library is loaded to your USER banks. So when you select a USER location on the MULTI-PART Editor main screen, its name and data will be available.

Again, if you have issues with TIME OUT ERRORS take the same actions. First, simply re-try it at the same settings.

Let us know. We just did this step-by-step with a MacBookPro and Motif ES7… and it works fine.

Bad Mister,
I very much appreciate the detailed breakdown and effort that you supplied.
Thank you.

I went ahead and uninstalled and reinstalled Midi Driver 1.2.1, and SM2 2.3.2 before walking through the steps you provided. Running 1.08 in the Motif by the way.

The only thing I did differently than the hundreds of times I have done this before was disconnect the motif from the USB hub on the computer (as per another thread I read on this site).

I am very happy to be fully connected and communicating with Studio Manager, and am very grateful for that.
Thank you again!

I am still having difficulty controlling Logic from the ES.

This is what I am experiencing:
When I press any transport key (play, stop, etc.) on the motif, the play cursor in logic begins this tiny continuous loop that will not stop unless i restart logic.

I am set to USB in the Mo, I have tried deleting control surface in logic and control surface preference file and letting logic rescan. The control surface comes up as Logic control. Ports are automatically set to USB 4 for logic control.
The problem was temporarily remedied by doing preferences > key commands > and using learn function for transport. This was temporary as during a session last night I hit the play button (about 2 hours in) and it just started again with the little back and forth oscillation of the play cursor.

Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks again
