I have just started on the path to creating my own arpeggios in the Motif ES and have a couple of questions.

I have played in a simple rhythmic pattern on a single note, I then export that to a user arpeggio, call it up in a voice and hey presto there is my arp, wow! what a great and easy way of creating arps nice one!

However at the moment the arpeggio will only play on one note at a time i.e. I am using a polyphonic voice however when I turn on my simple one note rhythmic arp.... then press a note it plays the arp at that pitch of the note but when I play a new note it mutes the last note making the patch monophonic.

What I would like to be able to do it play in a rhythmic pattern and then be able to apply that to whatever notes I play polyphonically kind of like a rhythmic gate with the arp playing on all notes that I am holding down. So if I hold down an A minor chord that rhythmic pattern is played by the whole chord in unison.

What I doing wrong?

A couple of other things occured to me when messing around with arps was that having four lanes is a easy way of thickening a patch i.e. I can record the same note into two lanes of the arp and it creates a voice doubling/thickening effect.

Also it seems that controller data can be recorded into the arp which I think means as there are four lanes its like having four tempo sync’d envelopes i.e. I could record (slowly :) ) into a pattern controller movements similar to the USER LFO and call these up in any voice via the arp section all automatically tempo sync’d.

If anyone has any tips or cool things that can be done with user arps please let me know.

Cheers
Geoff

What did I do wrong?

You answered your own question earlier in your post:

I have played in a simple rhythmic pattern on a single note

Try playing a simple rhythmic pattern using a C Major7 chord

C-E-G-B

This will allow you to convert this to Major7, Minor7, Dominant7, Diminished7 and Augumented+7. By play a four note chord you will be able to convert to any chord quality

Also it seems that controller data can be recorded into the arp which I think means as there are four lanes its like having four tempo sync’d envelopes i.e. I could record (slowly :) ) into a pattern controller movements similar to the USER LFO and call these up in any voice via the arp section all automatically tempo sync’d

In order to playback controller data as an arp, you must set the KEY MODE = direct… the controller movement will be applied to the notes you play on the keyboard.

The ARP Category “CTRL” (Controller data) has many Presets: Filter, Pan, Expression, Modulation, Pitch Bend… to try them out select any VOICE and set the ARP MAIN so you are selecting
Bank = PRE
Category = CTRL
Sub Category - your choice

Make sure the COMMON EDIT ARP page that the KEY MODE = direct, sort+direct or thru+direct

Control arps can only be heard when applied to notes played normally (or what is referred to as “direct").

Thanks for the help.
I am going to muck about with this.

It seems like once I know the controller data and have this relatively figured out :)

I could go into Logic Pro Hyper draw and quickly draw out the basic rhythmic gate effects in the right controller lanes and export that to the motif for use as quick and easy rhythmic gate effects.

I just need to make sure I avoid CC7 so as I can still mix a part as normal.
Gonna dig into the manual to find the CCs for different parameters.
Hopefully there is a patch volume or element volume controller assignment that I can use to keep away from CC7.

It also seems like this could be used in a similar way to the An1x/Plg150 4 lane envelope.

Thanks
Again
Geoff

Try out the ones already provided - you can probably save yourself plenty of time and effort. cc011 Expression is used to control the relative Volume

cc011 allows you to change the volume 127 increments from the main Channel Volume cc007.

Example, call up VOICE: PRESET 5: 049(D01) Se: Willows
Activate the ARP ON/OFF button, the [SF1]-[SF5] buttons will switch between several different Gated and Modulation effects using cc011 expression.
[SF1] = Gate
[SF2] = Gate
[SF3] = Mod
[SF4] = Mod
[SF5] = Gate

Tried them they are interesting many are too subtle for me like the trill (15,16) ones I hear almost no difference!

There are some quite specific things I want to do including some very specific gate effect rhythms etc. that I intend to use it for to allow me to have the option of different rhythms in the same patch rather than using the global LFO.

Thanks for the help

What can I say the Arpeggiator is amazing :)
I have got all the rhythmic gate stuff working exactly as I want now.
I can now have a patch with 5 different rhythmics gates rather than having to have five versions of the same patch with different user LFO settings.
YESSSSS!!!

Also I had amazing fun creating dub step basslines patches with this as I can draw in exactly the sort of filter and amplitude curves I want in Logic much like you can draw lfos in N.I.s MASSIVE save as a midi file load it up in the motif and convert to arp.
WOB WOB WOB :) Great Fun!

Its like having four user configurable LFOs :)

The next test for me is to have some fun controlling the effects section like a synth so I can do interesting signal chains like OSC>AMP SIM >FILTER where the filter is controlled by the arp.

A bit of wave-sequencing of the 4 elements could be fun too.

THANKS for all your help

This is truly awesome and will allow me to indulge the geek side for some time.
