hi i’m new to the motif world, and i just purchased the MOTIF XS rack, i have everything connected and configured following the installation for the studio manager and motif xs, my problem is that when i open “"just"” the studio manager window while running logic 9 i get a lot of “"XXXXX"on the midi channel i just recorded, also on the “midi in” signal i get the the “X” switching off and on.
if i go into studio manager references-midi settings- and uncheck the midi output port= motif-R XS port 4, the “X” does not occur but if i try to use the studio editor i will get an error message.
i’m able to use the motif on voice and multi mode without any of this problem, its only when i try to use the studio manager to get to the editor.
i took screen shots of the problem hopefully they are more clear than my explanation.

I cannot tell from your pics which port you are utlizing within Logic’s Library, (the bottom two pics). Are you certain that it is Port #1? You can verify which port it is in the Inspector. Click on the up/down triangles to the right of Port: see pic…

--------------------------------
the first pic I’m showing logic without the studio manager been opened, the issue only happens when i open studio manager.
if i don’t open studio manager I’m able to use the motif on any mode and be able to record midi without getting those X’s.
the installation said to check output port 1 and 4 and for input 1- and 4 on the studio manager settings.
when i record from the motif i use port 1.

hopefully i answered your question.
thanks for the help.

Ok then, a couple of things: the X’s are SysEx Messages and should not be appearing at all. It is even more unsual that they are appearing since in the top two pics, you do not even have the Rack XS ported in… hmm…

So, the question becomes why? Ages ago while waiting for Yamaha to support mLAN for Leopard OS, I ran into a similar problem and uninstalling and reinstalling the Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver cured it for me…

Also, Page 18 of the Rack XS manual details enabling the Host to USB port. Have you done that? And, I am assuming that there are no MIDI cables going into or out of the Rack XS. Is that correct? I’ll keep thinking…

One other thing would be the configuration of any surface controllers within Logic. Making sure they are not ported to the Rack XS. Ala Preferences> Control Surfaces> click on any CS and make sure the port is set correctly…

ok so i just uninstalled and reinstalled the yamaha usb drivers followed the instruction from top to bottom. but still having the same issue.
note that this only happens when i open studio manager, if i open logic 9 with the motif xs rack using port 1 it will not do it. now if i disable or uncheck the outport port 4 on the studio manager midi setting this stops but then i wont be able to connect to the editor. it almost looks like if the studio manager port 4 was interfering with something in logic.

One note: there is a workaround. There is also a very good reason why you would not want to use it. The workaround is to turn on, a sysex filter within Logic. By doing this, Settings> MIDI> Input Filter and check System Exclusive.

Why wouldn’t you want to do this? Because there is a limit to how many MIDI messages can be received on any sequencer at one time. And, the presence of these sysex messages are still being received and can ‘choke’ the MIDI Bus, throwing off the accuracy of note timing and playback… And, these sysex messages are not just being transmitted when you are recording, they are always present.

Therefore, the best solution is to find the source of the sysex messages and turn it off or eliminate it at the source as it will eliminate any future problems you may incur…

question what is “Ala” Preferences.

That is the path that you must choose to check the parameter. (Btw, I have corrected it).

From the Toolbar or from the Logic Pro at the top of the screen choose: Preferences> Control Surfaces Setup> click on any CS and make sure the Out Port and Input are both set correctly…

When I say, correctly, I don’t know whether you have setup any Control Surfaces but, they Should Not be set to any of the Rack XS’s ports…
