I have 3 devices that I need to connect together in my home studio. Connections are through midi and audio. I’m sure this will be a simple task for some of you that are more experienced with midi. My experience with MIDI is very limited. (I’ve done some research on this… but midi is just one of those things that I ALWAYS end up having to get help with.)

Here is the situation.

My equipment:

1. Fantom G7 (Midi In, Out, Thru)
2. Triton Pro X (Midi In, Out, Thru)
3. Motif Rack XS (Midi In, Out)
4. Tascam 1082 Firewire (no longer compatible w/ MAC OS X 10.6) (Midi In, Out A, Midi In, Out B)
5. Mac Book Pro
6. MOTU 2x2 USB Midi Interface (can only be used while connected to a computer)
7. Behringer EuroRack MX 1604A (12 channel mixer)

What I need to be able to do is: (MOST IMPORTANT ARE #1 AND #2, I THINK I HAVE THE REST)

1) Connect all three (#s 1,2,3) together through midi so I can trigger sounds from the Motif Rack (#3) from the Triton and/or the Fantom G
2) I need to be able to be able to Trigger sounds from the Triton from the Fantom G
3) I need the output of the Rack XS to come through the Fantom G (mix in) (simple, got this)
4) I need the output of the Triton to come through the Fantom G (mix in) (simple, got this)

Is it possible that I could have output from the Triton and the Rack XS going into the FG at the same time?.... for the purpose of sequencing and/or layering sounds.

I’d like to be able to do all this independent of a computer. I don’t want to have to have my computer sitting right there all the time for me to be able to have my home set up functioning properly.

BUT

If the need arises (which it sometimes will) I want to be able to just connect the USB from the Fantom G to the Mac Book Pro and start up logic and record everything into Logic. I will also need to (from time to time), trigger sounds from within Logic, and have them record to either the sequencer in Logic or the sequencer in the Fantom G.

I hope this all makes sense. And help or direction will be greatly appreciated. I’m trying hard to get my stuff set up so I can hit the ground running. I just need help getting started.

I’d like to be able to do all this independent of a computer.

So why list the computer (Mac Book Pro), the Tascam 1082, and the MOTU interface. Unless I misunderstand you, you want to do this without a computer - so that you can sometimes work in its absense. So then why list them?

Seems all you need is some kind of MIDI interface that works (without a computer) that also allows you to merge MIDI signals to the Motif-Rack XS.

but even with the midi merger will there be any midi channel settings that I will have to adjust to make the whole thing work?

The Motif-Rack XS can be set to receive on any of the 16 MIDI channels when in VOICE mode.

If you are using the Motif-Rack XS in MULTI mode, it defaults to one sound per PART, one PART per MIDI channel. You can customize that as you require on a per MULTI basis.

Can you not just daisy chain them?

I’m not sure.  You’re the first person between two different forums to suggest it…

Let me know what to try and I’ll try it.

No, you can’t. If the goal is to be able to either keyboard and have them both trigger the Motif-Rack XS, you would need to have some type of merge.

If you decide to use just one of the keyboards as your main controller then you could daisy-chain them but the original question was about using both (or at least that is how I interpreted it).

Daisy chain:
MASTER KEYBOARD’s MIDI OUT ---> MIDI IN of second keyboard ---> MIDI THRU of second keyboard ---> Motif-Rack XS MIDI IN

The MASTER KEYBOARD could play the second keyboard and could play the Motif-Rack XS… but the second keyboard would not be able to trigger the Motif-Rack XS.
