I am trying to add some Chorus effects on a Performance.
For some reason, I am unable to get Chorus on any Part except Part 1. Reverb works on all parts but Chorus only seems to work on Part 1.

I have checked it a bunch of times. I can have the same Voice in each Part, with the same settings, and Chorus only works on Part 1.

Has anyone else seen this phenomenon?

You don’t mention how you are attempting to “add some Chorus effects on a Performance” so I will need to speculate about this.

A PERFORMANCE is a combination (an ensemble) of up to four VOICES, each VOICE is placed in a PART. The PART parameters allow you to address the original VOICE non-destructively, that is you can alter things about it without having to edit the original VOICE in its original location.

If VOICE mode is analogous to the instrument player playing alone, then it follows that PERFORMANCE mode is analogous to the player having joined a musical ensemble.

Insertion Effects are like the individual musician’s personal effects and the SYSTEM Effects (room acoustics) are like those simulating the place the ensemble is playing in.

So while the musician can bring along their personal effect processors (INSERTION) from home, they all share access to the room acoustics of the performance place.

So System Effects are typically stripped off of the VOICE when you place it in a PART (be that PART the PERFORMANCE mode or the MULTI mode). In other words when placing a VOICE in a PART all CHORUS SENDS are reset to 0 (the send amount that was used in VOICE mode is not brought along - obviously in an ensemble the SEND amount would need to be adjusted, becauses sounds in an ensemble will require a different SEND amount). Also the REVERB SEND amount is not brought along either - but with reverb it is not completely removed. This is because the designers where afraid newbie users would never discover the REVERB SEND, all reverbs default to a very conservate SEND amount of “12”.

Now that said, if you are attempting to use the “COMMON” edit REVERB SEND and CHORUS SEND, these only affect PARTS that individually are being sent to these processors. By default all PARTS have at least an individual PART REVERB SEND of 12, but the individual CHORUS SEND may or may not be active at all. Most likely they are not.

The COMMON edit parameter for REV SEND and CHORUS SEND allow you to turn UP or DOWN, in proportion, REV SEND and CHORUS SEND amounts. However, if the individual SEND amount of the PART is 0, multiplying 0 by anything will still be 0.

So you will need to navigate to the individual PART parameters and then dial up some amount of SEND for the individual PART.

This is like this because say you have the chorus processor doing multiple repeats (or chorusing) - but you only want that effect on 2 of the 4 PARTS, and you need to increase/decrease the intensity in real time. Well, you can assign say a SEND amount of 30 for PART 1, 60 for PART 2, 0 for PART 3 and 0 for PART 4.

The COMMON edit CHORUS SEND when increased will affect PARTS 1 and 2 and will not affect PARTS 3 and 4. Say you increase the COMMON edit CHORUS SEND doubling the amount, PART 1 will increase and remain half as much as it is for PART 2, but PART 3 and 4 will remain 0.

You can distinguish between COMMON edit and PART edit on the top line of the Motif-Rack ES EDIT screen.
When you first press EDIT if “COMMON” is showing you can switch to individual PART EDIT by turning OFF the [MUTE/SEL] L.E.D, thus selecting the SELECT function. Now the PART (numbered) buttons will allow you to view PART parameters.
Cursor with the PAGE [<]/[>] buttons to the “OUTPUT” screen
Cursor DOWN to find “CHO SEND”
For the PARTS you want to real time control the SEND amount set a value. For the others leave them at 0.

To return to COMMON Edit leve you can press [SHIFT] + [COMMON]
Now when you increase or decrease the overall COMMON CHORUS SEND amount only the PARTS you have assigned CHORUS SEND to will respond. Make sense?

Hope that helps.

Thank you, Bad Mister.
You cleared up much of my misunderstanding.
I am using MidiQuest to program Rack ES, and the locations of the various parameters are not necessarily clear.
After your helpful tips, I was able to find the Common CHORUS Send as opposed to the Part CHORUS send. Nevertheless, at one point (of course not today), I was in a mode where I had identical VOICES assigned to PART1 and PART2, with identical CHORUS sends, and one worked and the other did not. It was probably due to handshaking issues between the software and the Rack ES.

Thanks again for your help.
