I’m sorry. I must be mentally deficient. I can’t seem to get anything but a “MIDI Checksum error” when trying to sent the SYSEX from Cubase to the Motif Rack XS through the MIDI-USB connection. Is there a firmware update mode or some other special setting on the Rack XS that’s required? I didn’t see anything in the documentation that specfically states the procedure for executing the actual upate. There are notes on backing up *before* the update - but no procedure on the update itself. I’ve also looked for some hint in the owner’s manual, but no joy. Please advise. And thanks. |

Take a look inside the zip file you down loaded again. You will see instructions in the file readme_ e.txt. Unless you prefer Japanese, then read the other one :) See the graphic below. Image Attachments

Hmmm… when I opened the .txt file out of the ZIP archive, it was truncated. When I open the file directly from the unZIPped location, I see the entire document which includes the instructions for start-up of the Motif unit. GO figure. Thanks. |

Is there any other way to do this update without Cubase? I wish they had a more user friendly way to do it ... |

i did it with logic… it very easy. you just plug it in. make the rack ready to recieve the update. set the midi file up in your DAW. push play (on the DAW) and wait for it to be complete… very simple. |

Playing back a MIDI file is a user friendly way to do… nothing could be easier. |

Apex, how did you get to import the midi file in logic? I try File—import—8F39OS_.PGM.mid and nothing happens. If I try double-clicking on the mid file; I get a bunch of tracks with nothing and one with sysexx data. When I try playing that file after setting the rack xs to accept firmware, I get error messages: Receiving error 1463. I have the rack ready for USB, playback at 120, I have logic pointing to the port 1. I don’t know… this doesn’t seem user friendly to me. I wonder if the fact that I have an mLan installed makes a difference (but I disconnected it before using the USB). Thanks in advance |

Ok. I figure it out. The problem was that Logic didn’t send the correct data. Since I couldn’t install Cubase, I did it with SysEx Librarian. Thanks! |

Glad you got it - but for the record you don’t need any particular DAW software, just one capable of playing back a .MID file. Window Media Player, or any application that can play a .MID file. The .MID file contains System Exclusive messages tht reprogram the memory of the Motif-Rack XS and update it. Most any file player will do the job. |
