Hi everybody, I decided to “update” my so beloved Motif 6 Keyboard with a Motif Rack ES connected via MIDI to his back...He now looks so pretty...and sounds so much better..
But already after 2 hours using it , i have questions that need answers.
Problems occur in multi mode. Is there anyway to select each track’s voice on the Rack via the M6 keyboard and his Mixing mode ? The sequencer transmits song’s events to the rack correctly, but changing the voices in the keyboard’s mixing mode does not transmit any MIDI to the Rack. I don’t think it’s a MIDI configuration issue, so the Sequencer would not transmit anything too, wouldn’t it ?
Don’t know if i’m clear. however thank’s for your help .

Each VOICE location in the Motif 6 and in the Motif-Rack ES has a Bank Select and Program Change identification, which you can input into the sequencer to select the correct sound. A Bank Select and Program Change event can be INSERTED into the Motif 6 sequencer to automate the changes to the device assigned to receive on that particular MIDI channel (each track transmits on a specific MIDI channe). From the SONG mode screen, select the TRACK [1]-[16], Press [ENTER] to view the EVENT LIST Here you can select [INSERT] and select EVENT TYPE = PROGRAM CHANGE. What you insert is explained below.... From the article on Bank Select and Program Change from our SUPPORT area here on Motifator:
Bank Select – Program Change
Bank Select is a two byte Control Change (cc) message - a MSB (most significant byte) and a LSB (least significant byte) these two Control Change message each will have a value. This value identifies the bank. Messages will be between 000 and 127. The Bank Select information is followed by a Program Change number (also a number between 000 and 127)
The format is “xxx-yyy-zzzâ€
You also will find some sequencers use the long form which involves Control Change 0 (MSB) with a value, followed by Control Change 32 (LSB) with a value, followed by the Program Change event.
All normal GM sounds are in MSB = 000, LSB = 000
So a Program Change message in the Yamaha sequencer that is:
The long form for the GM piano would be:
A Program change message in a Yamaha sequencer that is:
The long form for the GM Drum Kit would be:
In Yamaha synthesizers with Preset Banks, User Banks, Preset Drum Banks, User Drum Banks, etc. you will find they follow this format:
BANK MSB - LSB ___ Program Change
GM Norm = 000 - 000 __ 000~127 (1-128)
PLG-USR1 063 - 024 __ 000~063 (1-64)
PLG-PRE1 063 - 070 __ 000~063 (1-64) Slot 1
Although sounds listed in the Banks of the Motif-Rack ES have numbers from 001 through 128, the actual data that you enter into the sequencer will be counted starting with Program Change 000. So the sound located in the Rack ES as sound 001(A01) will actually have a Program Change value of 000. (Simply subtract 1 from the location number)> As an example, if you wanted to recall the “Full Grand†piano Voice PRE 1: 001(A01) on a track, you would insert the following data at a musically appropriate time:
From the main SONG or PATTERN screen
You cannot have the Motif-Rack ES change programs in the middle of a note, nor can you have it change programs and play a note simultaneously… therefore, a musically appropriate time is one where the instrument change does not negatively affect the music you are hearing. If there is a musical rest (pause) of approximately a 64th note you can usually insert a Program Change event. That is much faster than a human being can actually switch instruments. So in most normal instrument change scenarios you can use Program Changes to accomplish an instrument change. Of course, it will depend on your tempo - so the mileage will vary. If you hear a hiccup then you have not placed this event in a musically appropriate time in the music. Image Attachments
