Hi,
Still pretty new here, but learning slowly.  I am trying to do a simple task.  I want to transfer a midi song (file) from Sonar to the XS.  For now I am keeping it simple and using GM.

Two questions, really.

1.  Can I record the song on the XS as I play it off of Sonar in realtime?

2.  Can I transfer a midi file directly from my computer to the XS sequencer?

I’ve looked in the manual and tried a few things, but spending a lot of time going down wrong paths.  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Michael

1.  Can I record the song on the XS as I play it off of Sonar in realtime?

Yes. Set SONAR to send MIDI clock on the port going to the Motif XS. Set the Motif XS to slave to MIDI clock
Press [UTILITY]
Press [F5] CONTROL
Press [SF2] MIDI
Set MIDI SYNC = MIDI
Set SEQUENCER CONTROL = IN

Go to a blank SONG
Press [RECORD]
Press [F6] ALL TRACK
This will allow all tracks to be recorded. All data on MIDI channel 1 will go to track 1, 2 goes to 2 and so on.

2.  Can I transfer a midi file directly from my computer to the XS sequencer?

Yes. Save your Sonar project as a SMF (Standard MIDI File) - do not include any additional data like markers, etc., this will create a .MID file which can be opened by any MIDI sequencer, including the XS. Save it to a USB drive or on your computer (if using Ethernet)
Press [FILE]
Set File TYPE = SMF
Highlight the .MID file on your USB drive (or computer via Ethernet).. once you highlight the file name LOAD will appear
Target a blank song location
Press [SF2] LOAD

Thanks so much for your quick and thorough response.  I am impressed.  Now, if we can only get MLAN working on Win 7 (including my 01X).  :-) Right now I am booting on an old XP 32 bit drive (dual boot).

And I’d continue to do that, if I were you.

Your directions above were very clear on loading a midi file from usb drive (thumb drive).  At first I couldn’t find the files at all.  Digging in the manual, I see that you have to be in song mode before going to file to get that to work.  Just thought I’d add that for anyone searching the forums.

Mmm.  Cryptic, but are you telling me something?  :-)

The Motif XS is always context sensitive (good point though which cannot be restated enough). Context sensitive means if you are going to want to load something to the sequencer, you must be in the SEQUENCER mode to do so. So you cannot load a SONG or a SMF while in VOICE or PERFORMANCE mode, the option simply will not appear. Sorry, I should have mentioned that as well.

The generation mLAN products that included the 01X, i88X, MY16-mLAN, and the first mLAN16E (2003) are working with the computer operating systems they were designed to run with and survived one major upgrade of computer system changes. If you are running on a working computer OS, stick with it. Not to mix the metaphors here but the context that they were designed to run under will continue to work.
