Probably someone has asked this before but....can an OS update be downloaded onto a usb stick and uploaded from that stick to the ES or is it just a smart media card that can do this? I’m still running on version 1.01 and would like to get the latest update (1.08??) Thanks, aellison62

You have to update the ES from a smart media card. USB system updates are not supported on the ES.

Yes, this question is rised many times before. The answer is Smart Media ONLY, but there is also a cheaper solution since SM cards are so expensive because they are now obsolete. Buy SM to xD adapter (~$7) and xD card. I recomend you to find xD card up to 128Mb, since Smart Media limit is 128Mb. And since you will perform OS update only once, this card could be used later for your songs, voices, etc.

Unlike the Motif XS, the OS updates for the Motif ES did not add a lot of new functionality. The attached readme file (from the OS update download from yamahasynth.com) describes the major changes in the OS updates. You should note that like most software vendors, Yamaha does not list all of the minor bugs that were fixed by each OS update and you should therefore upgrade to the latest. Especially for an OS update that has been out for several years now… it is very unlikely that the newest OS introduces any unexpected bugs into your ES.

Regards,

Brad Weber

Hi Alex,

I have looked on the web and see smartmedia to XD card adapters but also smartmedia to SD card adapters. You suggested the XD card but would the SD card work just the same? Are XD cards cheaper/mb than SD’s?

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks Sciuriware,

OK, I won’t exceed 128mb, but I could download the OS update directly to the XD or SD card and then use the appropriate adapter to get the Motif ES to read it correct?

Well, ......... that’s exactly how I did it.

Don’t forget to unzip the moes108.zip in the PC.
Read the v108Readme_e.txt (unless you prefer the Japanese version);

the file to be loaded is named:  0745os_.pgm

Well, at the time when I tried to find the cheaper solution, I found only SM to xD adapter, but if you find with SD it’s the best, since SD cards are now the standard and you could buy them easily. As sciuriware said, use only up to 128Mb card, since it is the limit of SM in ES.

Alex

P.S. Where did you find SM-SD adapter? Please, send a link. Thanks!

Yes, I know that. But did you try to go to any offered links? I tried, but found nothing like adapter that will fit to smart media slot in ES and provide input for SD card.

if yamaha were smart they’d pay someone to do a firmware update that allows you to update from usb stick....but this is yamaha we are talking about...make things harder for the customer…

Firmware update? You don’t know what you are talking about.
May be you believe that a software update will create some extra
buttons too ...............
