I am creating my songs with a Rack XS and Cubase. I’d like to then move a complete copy of the song (midi, voices, mixing, effects, etc.) to be later played on an XS6. What are the best options to do this? Copy .mid and .EX0 files? Other? Thanks. |

Export the MIDI data from Cubase as a Standard MIDI File (.MID) file (480 pulses per quarter note, format type 0) Save your MIXING setup and Voices in Motif-Rack XS Editor File (.X1E). Go to BULK on the main menu bar and set to RECEIVE “ALL” - this will allow your (.X1E) file to contain all USER data. Import the Current MIX and Voices into the Motif XS Editor by changing the IMPORT file type to “Motif-Rack XS Editor file (.X1E)” Load the MIDI data to the Motif XS sequencer using the FILE TYPE = SMF |

In your scenario I would need to have a computer hooked up to the XS6 in order to open the editor and read in the X1E file. I don’t have a computer connected to the XS6; I was remiss in including that key piece of information in my initial question. I know I can copy the .mid file via usb thumb drive, but it doesn’t appear (reading the manual) that the XS6 can read an X1E file that way. Any other options with the requirement to move via a usb thumb drive? Thank you again. |

If you do not have the computer connected to the Motif XS6 (we assume it is impossible to have it in the same room at the same time as well) - you may be defeated. However, if you can connect the MIDI OUT of the Motif-Rack XS to the MIDI IN of the Motif XS6, you can bulk your MULTI over via standard MIDI cable.
In the Motif XS6 set the MIDI IN/OUT = MIDI
In the Motif-Rack XS set MIDI IN/OUT - MIDI
Call up the MULTI you wish to transfer

The Rack XS is in my home studio connected to a desktop computer and the XS6 is at my church. Hence my need to xfer via a USB thumb drive, which the XS6 accepts. Please don’t tell me there is no way to do this :-\ So, are the editor files different between the Rack XS and XS6? Can’t I have the Rack editor create a .X0E that I can give to the 6? |

Okay, I’ll try not to (:^) Here is what you can do… in your situation. You can create an EDITOR File for the Motif-Rack XS (.X1E) at home with your computer via the Motif-Rack XS Editor. Make sure you have used the BULK > DATA SYNC option to “RECEIVE” ALL the data .... check the “ALL” option. This will capture all USER VOICE data. Since the Motif-Rack XS and Motif XS share the same System Exclusive ID and many of the same functions, you can simply change the file extension in your computer to (.X0E). The good news is the Motif XS6 will see this file as one of its own. You can load it using the FILE > TYPE = EDITOR The bad news is: This will only import the USER VOICES - not the current MULTI… (there is a subtle but critical difference between the Multi and the Mixing setup)… The good news is: you can use your DAW (Cubase) for example, to record the BULK DUMP of your Motif-Rack XS MULTI… Save that as a Standard MIDI File (.mid) ... transfer that to a USB Stick… take it to church… and load the .mid file using FILE > TYPE = SMF (playback will take a few seconds) This will recall all the setups of the MULTI
Very Important: in Cubase AI4, for example, you can record the BULK DUMP of the CURRENT MULTI as follows:
Go to FILE > EXPORT > MIDI FILE
So go to church armed with three pieces of data on your USB stick:
1) A Motif-Rack XS file that you have renamed *.X0E ( that ‘ex-zero-ee’) - this will load all the USER VOICES to the Motif XS6 via the FILE > TYPE = EDITOR
That should do it. You will need to create just one EDITOR file (if you save it properly, it will dump all of the VOICES), but you will need a .MID BULK DUMP file for each composition. Simply “play” it to the SONG location, then press [STORE] to store the MIXING setup in the Motif XS6… now you can load the appropriate MIDI FILE to that same Location which will import the song data - and re-match it with the MIXING setup. Once you have everything re-assembled in the Motif XS6 (highly recommended): STORE an ALL data file in Motif XS6 format!!! Sounds more complicated than it is, really. If you are adept with Cubase you can “cut and paste” the bulk dump information onto the front end of the file (it is only a measure or two at most… either way will work. Hope that helps. |

Wow...OK. I will need to read through this a few times to digest, and then I’ll give it a try. Thank you again for your help. |

I reread the above. Can I simply load the XS editor onto my desktop under Studio Manager(in addition to the existing Rack XS editor, which is the VST version). Then, open the XS editor, read in the .X1E as explained above, then save as X0E file, which can be put on USB stick, along with the .MID? |

Sure… That will get you the .X0E file - but remember that will only load the USER VOICES, you still need to bulk the MIXING setup to a .mid File. Image Attachments
