This question has come up many times. I guess Yamaha are playing safe and specifying well within tolerance limits. However, it should be noted that 1 Gb of data will take approximately 45 minutes or so to load, so although it is technically feasible, it may not be the best recommendation for Yamaha to make from a customer satisfaction point of view! |

Some times this kind of devices (as laptops) can handle more ram than the one that is specificated on the user manuals. In this case, the motif ES only can handle 512 mb, I mean, you can install on it up to 1gb or 2 gb of Ram, but the keyboard only will be able to write and read on 512mb even if you have more than that. Sorry for my english and I hope this can clarify your doubts. Regards |

No alonramos, the ES can handle 1Gb.
I think that nobody at Yamaha ever believed that someone would use
... just like Bill Gates couldn’t believe that someone would ever

No, we felt that given the lengthy load time that we would not recommend it. Life’s too short - At 512MB with what the ES can do with it, is quite enough - Let us know how you use that 1GB (!?!) |

The load time of the XS (2007) is several times faster than the load time of the Motif ES (2003)… It is MUCH FASTER! Things do improve as we move forward in time. It is now more practical to load 1GB of data with the XS… |

zisidisnikos, the speed of additional(!) memory is not important

........ and I still wonder why people who write acceptable

Doesn’t the XS employ USB 2.0, which of course allows much faster load times than the USB 1.0 specification employed in the ES? Peter |

Yes USB-2, that’s a lot faster.
Btw.: USB is universal SERIAL bus.

Yes, I would just draw the distinction between using a communications interface to facilitate loading of the samples from an external source and the different action of the processing of the sample internally. By the way, USB 3.0 has been released, so maybe the next Motif will have that facility to enable even faster loads? |

Yeah and since USB3 is more than an order of magnitude faster than USB2 (5 Gb/s vs. 400 Mb/s) the upside is quite high… on the other hand, at those rates, its likely that the bottleneck won’t be the interface, but rather the internal architecture of the next generation Motif. (As a matter of fact, that was the case for Motif, Motif ES and Motif XS as well as none of them came anywhere near the maximum transfer speed of the mass storage interfaces they supported.)
