Bad_Mister you are the man when it comes to the Motif Rack XS!
This is the only place I have found on the web that knows this piece of equipment!

Here is my problem (If this is a problem)

Computer: Intel core I7 at 2.8 GHZ. 3 gigs of ram. Windows XP 32
Audio Interface: Yamaha N12 Mixer running through firewire. It has all the latest updates from Yamaha.
Sequencer: Cubase 5 updated to lastest patches.
Voice Generator: Yamaha Motif Rack XS (Not updated firmware 1.00.00)
Keyboard: Yamaha PSR 275 (Used as Midi Keyboard surface only)
Drivers: Latest Versions of Yamaha USB Driver, Yamaha Motif Rack XS Extensions, and Yamaha Motif Rack Editor VST.

Routing
The N12 is connected to the computer by firewire interface (works great!) The Motif Rack XS is connected to the computer by USB cable (Followed all the installation advice from here and seems to work great!) The Yamaha PSR 275 Midi Out is plugged into the N12 Midi in. (Again works great!)

My issue is that all of my Internal MIDI VST instuments can be heard(monitored) back through the Stereo Bus of the N12. This is not the case with the Motif Rack XS. I am online just fine with the Motif Rack VST editor, I can record Midi data no probem, edit with the editor, and even change voices through Cubase.

My work around for this was to plug the Motif Rack Xs 1/4” output jacks into a stereo input channel on the N12 Mixer (Channels 9 and 10) This works Great! But is it correct?

Shouldn’t I be able to monitor the Motif Rack XS Back Through the Firewire to the Stereo Bus of the N12 just like all the other internal VST Instruments?

I have all my Midi Ports set exactly like you show (and they work so I don’t think they are an issue.)

In the VSTi section of the VST editor it showed the N12 bus left and right and all of the N12 input channels on the right hand side of the screen. on the left side it showed the Motif Rack XS output chanels 1 through 8 left and right. I tried mapping all the XS outputs to all the inputs shown on the Yamaha (Again in the VSTi section of the editor) and no matter what I tried I could not get any audio back out of the n12. By the way once a port was mapped an exclamation point would show up in the port block is that normal? it stayed orange as long as I didn’t try to map 2 ports to it. If I did the port block would turn red.
Since I couldn’t get the audio to work I just cleared all the VSTi connections and closed the window.

Am I missing something here? or am I stuck using the audio work around I described above.

I sure would appreciate any help or info you can give me.

Thanks,
Strings10

Yes. That is correct. In order to hear the Motif-Rack XS you will need to connect its audio outputs to your n12 (it, the n12, is acting as the soundcard to route signal to your speakers and to your DAW. Not sure why you think this is a ‘workaround’ or something unusual. It is quite natural that the audio of the Rack XS must have a path to your speakers for you to monitor, just as it must have a path to your DAW (Cubase). The USB connection from the Rack XS to the computer is USB-MIDI (and sends MIDI data only), audio must be routed.

The Motif-Rack XS Editor VST allows you to route MIDI data from your DAW, Cubase, to the Rack XS tone engine and ensures the path of audio return. We assume the you have selected to route your controller keyboard as “In ‘All Input’”, this will allow you send MIDI data and route it OUT to the Motif-Rack XS VST… The MIDI data will trigger the tone engine of the Motif-Rack XS and it will generate ‘audio’. The audio must be returned to the DAW via a known pathway. (That is what you establish on the VSTi SETUP page within the Editor.

You can connect the analog outputs of the Rack XS to two channels of the n12 - the n12 channels that you use should then be selected in the Motif-Rack XS Editor VST > FILE > VSTi SETUP

On the VSTi SETUP page is where you select the audio pathway for the returning audio - if you have the Motif-Rack XS physically plugged into channels 9/10 then that is what you should select for LEFT and RIGHT. Channel 9 for the LEFT channel and Channel 10 for the RIGHT

This will establish the complete path for your data.

An exclamation “!” mark in the VSTi SETUP screen is not a good thing, it means that you have selected a return that is not available, not found, or not set properly.

Shouldn’t I be able to monitor the Motif Rack XS Back Through the Firewire to the Stereo Bus of the N12 just like all the other internal VST Instruments?

You make no mention of the mLAN16E2 being installed in the Motif-Rack XS… the mLAN16E2 allows you to return 8 pair of outputs from the Motif-Rack XS via firewire to the computer. Since you do not have the mLAN16E2, you must return the audio as I describe above to the n12 (via analog connections to your soundcard, which is the n12). The n12 will return the signal back to the DAW via firewire.

You can, additionally, connect the two assignable analog outputs on the back panel of the Motif-Rack XS to channels of the n12 if you would like to use two additional assignable outputs (total of four outs).

Hope that helps.
