Can I do an “all file” backup to an external hard drive using a firewire connection from the external drive to the mLan input on the back of the XS?

USB storage or via a network connection are your options

No is the correct answer.

You can backup your data as an ALL data file in two ways:
1) to a USB Drive connected to the USB TO DEVICE port
2) to a (shared) networked computer via Ethernet

The mLAN/Firewire port is for realtime MIDI and audio data only. Not for storage.

That said: (You can BULK DUMP data via the MIDI portion of the mLAN/Firewire but to a specific program like a librarian/Editor utility program).

But there is no Bulk protocol for items like samples, songs or audio - you would not really want to do that at the speed of MIDI communication… Imagine dumping a 292MB ALL data file via a MIDI bulk dump… You could run a marathon in the amount of time it would take.

By the time files get to a certain size, bulk dumping via MIDI is simply impractical.
