I need some help please:
I’m connecting my Motif to Ableton live 8 through usb midi cable.
P.S: I know that one of the alternative solutions is to record as audio instead of midi, but for now, this is impossible because i need to buy a USB firewire first… |

The Motif will only change to its GM bank when YOU send it a GM RESET command. So your question is better targeted to Ableton - you are (some how) sending a GM reset from your software. If you are using a commercially generated MIDI file, then you need to remove the GM RESET command from the first measure of Track 1 the message is: F0 7E 7F 09 01 F7 This is a GM RESET command and tells all receiving devices to change to their GM bank, trust us, we never had a Motif make a truly independent decision about sound selection :) Hope that helps. |

Working with Ableton recording MIDI data . . .
You play the keyboard but it only outputs the MIDI data through the USB or MIDI connection which Ableton then ‘records’ into its sequencer.
If you look at the voice info in a song mix you will see each voice has a patch number 001 through to 127 and a pair of bank select numbers, eg 63 0 (User 1), 63 1 (User 2), 0 0 (GM); etc.
Of course you may be fortunate like Cubase users - we can download a patchscript file which will allow us to setup Cubase so that we can simplify this process and choose sounds by their name ratehr than by the numerical method detailed above - if such a thing exeists for Ableton, then that woudl be a better route for you. Bad Mr’s GM reset command is a useful piece of info because many commercial Midi files work off the GM soundset only and so you need to put this command in to help the motif choose the right sounds. If it is present at the start of your ableton file than that will also affect the voice your motif ends up playing. Hope this helps. |

I figured out what the problem is:
When i route the “midi out” to my Motif, Ableton plays it back correctly actually, but when i choose my laptop’s built in “midi out”, which is MICROSOFT GS WAVETABLE SYNTH, Ableton only recognizes the GS sounds (hense the GS name).
Am i on the right path ? |
