Hi…

I am just checking to see if there is an easy way to do this…

I make a song on the Motif ES. The song is ready to be dumped into my DAW [Sonar 8 Producer Edition]. Instead of saving a .SMF I want to know if there is a way to record the MIDI tracks directly into Sonar?

Or, if you can share the way you work that would be great to...?

I find myself working on the Motif ES first to build the foundation tracks for my songs and then once I am ready I dump them into Sonar and add more and get a lot more intricate.

The way I do it now:

1. Make my song
2. Save a .SMF from SONG MODE
3. Open the MIDI file in Sonar
4. Select my MIDI Input / Output channels
5. Select the VOICES I used from The Motif ES (This part takes forever...) Maybe there is a more efficient way to do this?

Thanks in advance!

Yes there is an easier way to do this. You should start your MIDI
song in Sonar, not on the Motif. The Motif should be set up to
SONG mode and used as a tone generator (receiving sound module).
You should be able to configure things so that the Motif is also
the Master Controller for Sonar.

Believe it or not, the keyboard section of the Motif is a separate
thing from its tone generator. It can be used to trigger virtual synths or drum machines or software samplers inside Sonar as well
as trigger “external” synths. The “synth” section of the Motif would be an “external synth.

For now, if you want the MIDI data from the Motif to go into Sonar,
you will have to export it as a Standard MIDI File and then open
it up in Sonar.

Dave,

Is there no way to setup Sonar to record the MIDI parts form the ES??? Or is that just pointless?

I’m no guru, but I believe you need to go to

SONG > TRACK > CHANNEL

to set up the channel output assignments, then

SONG > TRACK > OUT SW

to turn on the midi commands going out of the ES.

When the Song plays back, you should be able to record it in Sonar. I did this with arpeggios going into Cubase AI4.

Read this

for more information. From the title it might not sound like it applies to your situation, but it does.
