Thats kick ass!

What they dont talk about is how much setup and raw data criteria it surely requires to do the things you want it to do. ...and just think, that was just a primitive version of what the product will look like once it hits the market.

I beleive once we get thru this recession there will be another large boom in new and crazy technology.

So you can make like Tom Cruise in “Minority Report"- guess it could
be fun.

Strikes me as the Segue did - anyone remember that one?
I see a few in use by police patrols in Santa Monica, but the
Segue certainly didn’t replace the car or even the bicycle as the
primary mode of transportation on the planet.

The question is - how much will it cost for the service connection
to the database? I don’t use texting or my camera phone or mobile
web anyway, primarily because of the extra cost, and secondly because I just don’t “need” those things.

If anything, I see the military as the main customer for this
kind of thing.

I think this is fantastic!!! You don’t have to think or reason anymore when interacting with people. Just “look at them” and you will see “who they are” and what they do. Of course, equipped with the same technology, they can see “you” as well.

And I definitely need this thing for shopping. I just don’t know what to “buy” anymore and whether it is a superior product, an environmentally friendly product, or a cheap knock off.

I like the idea a “drawing a watch” on my wrist to find out what time it is or pulling up the “phone” on the palm of my hand to dial. So much for that Rolex I’ve been saving for.And who needs a Blackberry?

And why bother reading. Pick up the book or newspaper and assimilate the contents,or, make the book a video. This puts the Evelyn Woods Speed Reading program out of business.

I was wondering what we were going to do now that there is no “Common Sense” anymore. Had to replace it with “something”. And we get rid of watches, phones,iPods, computers, cameras and so on to boot. What’s next? Thought Sex. Just wiggle your fingers at your significant other and “Wheeeeeewwwww”! Orgasm!!!!

Seems like the only “thinkers” and “innovators” will be people that come up with this stuff.

Let us all bow down at the Throne of Science. And you thought Christians and people of religious faith were zealots and dogmatic. You ain’t seen nothing yet!
Halle-neuron and Aaaaaamen!!!

Is that sarcasm? Coming from a guy who uses a synthesizer instead of a piano.

a guy who uses a car instead of a horse (or walk) does your car have autostart?

a guy who uses a refriderator instead of an ice box (or fresh food only)

a guy who probably has a cell phone (blue tooth?)

a guy who probably has a furnace instead of wood stove (air conditioner?)

a guy who probably has more than one TV (a useless innovation) remote control??? LOL

a guy who probably owns more than one calculator. (12x36 quick!!)

a guy who certainly uses a pc with internet access for info (rather than a phone book, and local dealer help)ever bought online?

Dukester, are you “a guy” who takes advantage of these innovations?

Say it aint so :)

I think I get where Dukester is coming from. He’s not anti-technology, he’s just coming from the place of, enough with the fascination with technology instead of real human advancement.

Technological advancements don’t equate with human/social advancement. We tend to get transfixed by gizmos with lights and screens - as Colonel Parker, Elvis manager, once observed - “lights draws folks like bugs to a flame”.

In the shadow of the current economic and world news, this “amazing development” is basically a non-event. A technology that would pinpoint with 100% accuracy the whereabouts of Osama Bin laden - now that would be something.

Those of us over 50 just aren’t as easily entertained, I suppose.
We’ve been through quite a few “revolutionary” developments ourselves - like Betamax and the 8-track tape. Y’all need to come up with something better than a a virtual keypad lighting up on your palm.

Thanks,DaveP. I’m glad someone gets were I was coming from.
MoGut....
I’m old enough to remember “Party Lines”.
I have a cell phone, but it doesn’t rule me. I have had it for about 5 years now. I got it because I drove and old car and from time to time needed to call AAA. I only memorized the number about 2 years ago. I don’t use it for the Internet. When I’m out of town I use it to call my wife rather than the hotel phone.

I’m old enough to remember out of tune piano gigs and lugging around a Fender Rhodes, hence, my back issues now.

I’m old enough to remember the produce wagon that came through my neighborhood, horse drawn.

I’m old enough to remember having one TV in the house and it was in the living room, Black and White. The first color TV that came into our house went into my parents bedroom.

I’m old enough to remember 78s and Victrolas.

I am old enough to remember when we hung out our laundry to dry on a cloths line.

I have no problem with technology that has made our lives easier. This is pushing the line...to “me”. I was fascinated that my grandmother saw the car, the plane, the radio, the TV and a man on the moon. Technology has become invasive. And we “know” where Bin Laden is.

Excuse me if I’m just a bit cautious with developing technology. I saw “Sneakers” and “The Net”.
Just a thought.........

And even those movies are starting to look out of date. Check out the size of the cell phones! I don’t know how many “futuristic” movies I’ve seen where the future included big old CRT displays or even the old green with white text IBM displays.

The thing about what the original post pointed to is - did anyone actually ask for this? The presenter looks nervous, the whole thing reminds me of the scene in “Videodrome” where Richard Dysart is welcoming the faithful to the convention.

here’s a nice innovation in tech - when you go to a have a CT scan these days, you don’t have to drink that awful dye first. At least that is some actual progress.

No, but then this is the age old case of a technology solution looking for a problem. Actually it is a number of technologies put together to make some application sense. And in fact, none of the technology shown is really new. Small projectors - been out for ages. Mobile data networks to lookup and download information - same. (Of course, the level of databases to supply the information discussed in the demo are a long way off yet, and may fall foul of privacy laws).  Image ID for products - been in development for ten years and still some way to go, but the basic technology is there. Face recognition - in its infancy, but still fairly well-tried technology.

To be fair to Pranav Mistry (the developer behind the product) he is a smart young guy from MIT who has put together some good interface technology to amalgamate the solutions and to develop a useable man-machine interface. However, like many of these demos they are more a pure demonstration of smart technology rather than the announcement of a big step forward in solving a real application.

You’ve got that right, DaveP!I’m no authority on “futuristic” movies, but have been a “Trekkie” since “Next Generation”. One of my convictions has been, if they “thought” of it and put it in a movie or TV show,"someone" must have thought of it and at the very least have a “theory” as to how to make it work or a possible prototype as evidence of the potentials.

Technology of the past 20 years or so is staggering. We’re not talking about the transition from “Horse and Buggy” to Automobiles or “Washboards and wringers” to multi-setting,energy efficient,front-load washing machines, to say nothing of the Telegraph and Morse code to these things that seem to be hanging on belts or in the purses of many women. We are in the midst of “No More Secrets”. Go to the right Web-site and I can see my wife working on the plants in front of the house.

“I” consider,"Okay! Where the lines of responsibility and ethics are for one person in regards to another and who is worthy of its control”? Is it one person over another? Is it one company over another? Is it the government over the populous? It seems to “me” that, though at this point unavoidable and out of control in the way of development, there will be total lose of privacy of individuals. As it stands now,one can be “tracked” just by having his cell phone on (and “I” think that all one has to do is have one on or off).

This truly is a remarkable piece of innovation, but at the same time demonstrates another step in the division of peoples and the control over them by assuming powers.
.....but that’s just “me”

Trust is the problem. A Chinese person was being interviewed during the Summer Olympics. He was asked if he always agreed with his government. Paraphrasing, he said it was not a matter of likability or whether he always agrees with them. He said that it was a matter of trust, and that he trusted his government to do the right thing for the country, and this was enough.

This kind of thinking is completely foreign to anyone in America. We pretty much trust no one in authority - and for the most part I’d have to say for very good reasons.

In other words, we fear that the GPS in our cell phone will be used to somehow diminish our security and sense of ‘self’, as opposed to the stated reason that it helps us to be located if we call 911. It’s the same with just about anything. How about the Event Data Recorders in your vehicle? http://www.iihs.org/research/qanda/edr.html Even On-Star can be used to actively track a vehicle.

Telephone calls to/from the US from other countries are monitored, and heaven only knows what actual capability our government spooks have to keep track of whatever they’d like to. I’m no internet expert, but I have to believe that if an ‘official agency’ wanted to find out about our activities, they could.

This kind of stuff is creeping in on our lives in so many ways, it makes a person wonder if the ‘true’ end result can really be anything good.

I think its a scary development.

Its close to “Big Brother” is watching you. How much private data will be in those data banks available. I think a lot, otherwise the whole idea is not working.

Poor next generation who have to live in that kind of world.

Coolness factor: 7
Reality check for usefulness: 4
cost to benefit ratio: currently unknown but estimate to be around a 3

Heck - to run the iphone with what it was meant to do - you have to fork out about 2800 a year for your connection charges plus several hundred for the phone and $1-$6 for each app you want.

Imagine what the connection/data rate would be for this?

I agree that so much of technological developments lately are aimed at being antipersonal. Sort of reminds me of Judge Dredd (I think it was - with Stallone)

Im not anti-technology - as a matter of fact I just recently stepped into the world of bluetooth - not that is a useful invention - hands free - if you’re talking on your cell and you step into your car - the conversation can instantly be switched to your car’s mic/speakers with one button.
Hands free for driving.
