While sitting and thinking recently (something that could be actually very dangerous :-), I began to think about the question the musicians are almost always asked during an interview--that being--"Who has had the greatest influenece on your playing style?” For me, as a B3 (gotta have a 147 with it) and Rhodes (a 1975 73 Key or 88 Suitcase works for me) player, the answer would be a number of prolific individuals. However, one person that stands out above the rest is the late great Billy Preston. For those of not familiar with him, below is a little info. More can be found at this Wikipedia link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Preston Here is just a snippet his bio: In addition to his successful, Grammy-winning career as a solo artist, Preston collaborated with some of the greatest names in the music industry, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Nat King Cole, Little Richard, Eric Burdon, Ray Charles, George Harrison, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, King Curtis, Sammy Davis Jr., Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, Richie Sambora, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. He played the Fender Rhodes electric piano and the Hammond organ on the Get Back sessions in 1969. Preston is the only non-Beatle to receiving billing as an artist alongside the Beatles (as distinct from receiving credit as a session musician on album packaging) on an official Beatles record release. The label of the Get Back single credits the artists on the record as “The Beatles with Billy Preston”. With that said, I set out to do a quick little tribute song in honor of Mr. Preston. It’s called “Amazing Grace (A Tribute to Billy Preston). I am in the very early stages of composition so as you listen bare with me. I dropped a scratch Sax patch in so as to give a friend of mine who plays the Sax an idea of the direction I would like to go in. Open to suggestions and ideas from all you folks from out there in MO World. File Attachments
