I want to record microphone audio (vocals) and piano on separate channels using the Motif XS8 mLAN & Cubase.

Is it possible to do this with the A/D input?

Like to record singing + piano but on separate channels using mLAN?

If it is, what are the setup procedures?

I’ve tried a number of different combinations but haven’t gotten it to work yet.

thanks pmattox

Apparently it IS possible.... see thread below and you may be able to PM the guy who says it is, and ask him how he does it....

Actually, it is fairly easy and straightforward.

A PART from a Motif XS PERFORMANCE or a PART from a SONG/PATTERN MIXING program can be assigned to audio outputs. By default, they all are assigned to L&R;OUTPUTS. You can see this as follows:

Press [EDIT]
Press the PART’s select number [1]-[4] (if a Performance) or [1]-[16] (if in a SONG or PATTERN)
Press [F1] VOICE
Press [SF2] OUTPUT
The parameter is OUTPUT SELECT

The AD INPUT Part like any of the Motif XS Parts can also be routed to its own discreet audio (mLAN) output.
From the PERFORMANCE or MIXING program you are using
Press [EDIT]
Press [COMMON EDIT]
Press [F4] AUDIO IN
Press [SF1] OUTPUT
Here you can see the parameters that control the AD INPUT
It also has the OUTPUT SELECT parameter.

So say you want to play piano and sing… while recording your piano in stereo and your vocal to a mono track:

Create a new PERFORMANCE:
Press [PERFORM]
Press [JOB]
Press [F1] INIT
Press [ENTER] to execute
This will assign the Full Concert Grand as PART 1 of your PERFORMANCE.

Setup your microphone:
Press [UTILITY]
Press [F2] I/O (Inputs and Outputs)
Set the MIC/LINE parameter = Mic
There is a GAIN control on the back panel right next to the “L mono” input.

Go to your PERFORMANCE
Press [EDIT]
Press [COMMON EDIT]
Press [F4] AUDIO IN
Press [SF1] OUTPUT
Assign the AD INPUT Part OUTPUT SELECT to “m1” (mLAN 1 output)

In Cubase go to DEVICES > VST CONNECTIONS > INPUT tab
Usually on a NEW PROJECT if you select the “EMPTY” template… Cubase will assign a Stereo input bus for you. If not, create one using the ADD BUS button.
The STEREO IN will receive signal from the Motif XS on “Motif XS Main L” and “Motif XS Main R”
Create a mono bus: Click ADD BUS > MONO
Assign the AUDIO DEVICE to your ASIO Driver (mLAN or YSFW)
Assign the DEVICE PORT = Motif XS 1

On the main Track window create one Stereo Audio Track assigned to STEREO IN, create one Mono Audio Track assigned to MONO IN.

Set both tracsk to Record Record ready… Go…

By the way, the A/D INPUT can be processed with its own two INSERTION EFFECTS… so, for example, you may want to record using the VCM COMPRESSOR and a nice REVERB… but that is up to you. As soon as the PDFs from the Behind the Manual area are completely ported over to the new Motifator, you can find a TWEAK OF THE WEEK article on setting up a microphone with the Compressor.

Also the procedure for setting up this in a SONG or PATTERN is the same.
