I’m all caught up on the Mar. 3rd driver and firmware updates. Motif XS6 and Rack XS, both with MLAN16E2, MR816CSX and Cubase 5 on a Mac utilizing the new VSTi. It is all working AMAZING! Quick question, I have heard/read that you can use the on-board Motif effects as external effects via the FW driver/Mlan (I hate that word… Mlan). I want to run audio into Motif and use it’s internal effects in real time via FW, for mixing and haven’t found much in the manual about how to go about it in Cubase. Any ideas? |

Ok - here’s my answer. No doubt, you will be presented with a correct solution in due course. :) There are 3 Stereo returns(inputs) TO the XS when using mLan. The first is XS Main L&R;and the second is (something like) MOTIF XS FW or Motif XS mLan. (depending on whether you are using the YSFW Driver or the AI/mLAN driver). It is this second pair which will route your audio back from Cubase in order that you can use the XS’s internal effects. Set up your Audio track in Cubase with the output going to the above port. You will then be able to route the post-effect signal back out to Cubase. The (possibly) confusing bit is that the screen you want will actually appear under an ‘Audio In’ button on the XS. When I was looking how to do this, I was alwayslooking for output. Actually it is quite logical as you are telling the XS what to do with its audio signal coming IN over mLan/FW. Press [Song] [Mixing] then [F5 - Effect]. That takes you to the effects screen which you can fathom for yourself. The bit you need to know is to press [F4 Audio In]. There you will see the AD Input for your Mic/Guitar etc and the mLan or FW input which (as stated above), is the sound coming from your DAW. You can then choose over which channel to route the signal out after you have inserted the effects. All you need do then is set up an audio track in Cubase to receive over the output channels you chose. There is more to it than that (he said having exhausted his knowledge) but I think the above might point you in the right direction. Good luck, B PS The above refers to the Motif XS and not the rack. |

That sounds logical, thanks! I’ll give it a go. I wonder if anyone has any experience with the RACK XS? And is it possible to use separate effects on different Mlan channels, simultaneously? |

There are indeed three pairs of audio returns via IEEE1394 Firewire coming back to the Motif XS as follows:
Motif XS Main L&R;- returning signal is sent to the main L&R;outputs
The returning signal that goes to the XS mixer (Motif XS mLAN L&R;) arrives as an AUDIO IN. You can see this channel as follows:
Press [MIXING]
You can also see this as follows:
The AD INPUT is analog
Both can be routed to the XS SYSTEM EFFECTS (Reverb and Chorus)
The same holds true for the Motif-Rack XS with one difference, the Rack XS does not have an AD INPUT Part. The Motif XS (keyboard version) INSERTION effects can be used in real time to process analog inputs. But signal arriving digitally (via mLAN) cannot be processed in real time via the INSERTION EFFECTS. You can however, sample it, then apply Insertion Effects to your USER VOICE. As mentioned, the SYSTEM EFFECTS are available for the firewire input. We will hopefully be able to post the first (in the series) of tutorials that will deal with some of the things you can do with the IEEE1394/Firewire routing and processing. Combined with Cubase 5, you will find that there is a remarkable amount of creative stuff available. With a Motif XS w/mLAN16E2, a Motif-Rack XS w/mLAN16E2 and an MR816 - you can have as many as 48 simultaneous inputs to Cubase 5! - Pretty powerful stuff… |
