I use Sonar for recording. Does this mean that I cannot use the new VST editor for my XS 8?

Cubase / Nuendo 4 or higher only.  The editors are not VST2.  They are VST3 only.  This is a new Steinberg plug in format and no other DAW has adopted it as of yet.  There is still no VST3 wrapper either.

You can use the regular editor that runs on Studio Manager. It’s nearly the same, except that it doesn’t support audio routing of course.

But you can edit the settings of your XS and save them as a file, for example in the same folder as your Sonar project.

Until your DAW of choice adopts VST3 protocol (which is only a matter of time), you can use the Studio Manager version 2.3.0 and Motif XS Editor version 1.1.1

Unfortunatly, not all the Host Software manufacturers are willing to become VST3 compliant...Many of them can’t find interest in VST3 support, i.e. Cakewalk/Sonar.

It could be a long time before there is VST3 support, and first there would have to be a demand for it.

For most third party developers it certainly makes more sense to make a plug for 2.x which has broader compatibility.

Right now someone making a VST3 plug has to know his/her only market is Cubase/Nuendo....

This demand and implementation of VST3 adoption by other platforms can and probably will take at least a year if not longer, and will most likely be driven by non Steinberg VST3 plugins (or at least VST3 plugins that will run on non Cubase hosts) that are perceived as must haves.

I and many others would love to see a VST2.4x plugin that did everything but the audio routing, which certainly should be possible…

VST3 could be Yamaha’s next mLan, who knows? It certainly doesn’t hurt to hedge while pleasing the customer base :)
