This thread rocks for so many different reasons.  Somehow, it’s restored my faith in humanity a little bit.

I’m glad you liked the thread - your reaction is more than I would have ever anticipated.

benj00 -

Thanks 5pin!

You’re welcome, and thank you.

I don’t know how I missed this thread originally, but I really enjoyed reading it just now, and I think it was an excellent effort on the part of 5pin and everyone else who helped out.

Yamaha makes great synths, which means that by definition folks who have chosen them are people of great taste and character…

Hi,

Interesting thread. To me, the MOX and MOXF sound really nice. I own a MOX6. I can’t really tell the difference between XS and MOX or XF and MOXF. But here is a interesting website on the chips and processors the XS and MOX use. Both models use different processors and chips but I am not sure if it really affect the sound quality.

I think this person really did a good analysis of the synths.

Hi --

Didn’t expect to see links to my site in this thread. :-)

Thanks, I’m glad that the analysis helped you out.

Analysis of the new PSR-S770 and PSR-S970 turned up a new Yamaha tone generator chip which will probably make its way into the Motif series (or whatever it may be branded in the future).

The link to the tone generator analysis is:

Thanks, again!

there. I just deleted my ‘pontification’, along with all my off topic this and that, not to mention all the spam.

Sorry, d5pin. Won’t bother you again.

It’s just the kind of thing you do when you are out of musical ideas to do…

I completely agree, BM. [...]

This is not a judgement on the subject of this thread, or about the people participating in it. I am only speaking in general, about all of us (including myself. I too wasted time with silly crap. Lots of it.). I only am saying that I get perfectly BM’s point, and that to me it makes complete sense. [...]

So you’re not being judgmental, you just think such things are “silly crap”.

Riiiight…

I really appreciate this thread, although it would be awesome to hear some real filter squelching: MoxF VS Motif FX :)

Cutoff and Resonance mangling live! I couldn’t find such comparison video or audio files.

That could set some perspective on this discussion. When I buy my MoxF, I will do that for sure and post here on the forum :)

Thanks.

There is a pretty interesting recent comparison:

https://youtu.be/czrsE94q9x8

I bought a MOXF6 about 2 years ago, and I don’t regret it, but it did not sound as well from audio jacks as I expected.

Here you can see “Mex” struggling with the issue.

https://youtu.be/AnN1cNr34tI

My understanding is the OS is not the same as Motif (under the hood) or the DACs, IE the mainboard is different. This is totally understandable. It is much less money.

However the selling point “MOTIF engine” is vague, and depending on how you define “engine” it may or may not mean the same thing. I certainly believed the MOXF was going to produce the same sound as the MOTIF, at least if I plugged in my 88 key controller with AT. Especially since many threads had users posting that it did.

The MODs are between a rock and hard place on this. They have been so helpful and responsive on many issues, I cannot fault them.

But at this point it is pretty clear the MOXF does not sound like a MOTIF to close listeners using onboard audio DACs. Perhaps there is some way to get closer using the USB out, which may record the two near identical pre-DAC. But Apple’s laptop DACs are good but, I doubt they can match the MOTIF, but perhaps a digital out to.....my VIRUS TI? With it’s incredible reverb etc. I have have not tried that.

But let’s be clear: as these videos suggest, MOXF is not MOTIF audibly on many patches, to many ears, and it may not even be as nice as MX (which we’d assume benefits from newer DACs etc), Caveat being onboard audio out to amp and speakers. Of course the MOXF has the detailed sequencer and many nice buttons I prefer to the MODX screen, and many many other features.

I still find myself searching for a MOTIF from time to time.....
