Chick Corea’s place in the history of jazz, fusion, and keyboard playing to name but three of his many contributions to music, has long been set. But all good things must come to an end and it is with great sadness that we learned of Chick’s passing this week. In addition to admiring Chick from afar for decades, we also had the privilege of sponsoring a concert of his almost a decade ago in our hometown of Santa Cruz, alongside Stanley Clarke and Jack Dejohnette. The concert came shortly after the release of the sample library for the Motif XF, Chick’s Mark V, which was a loving recreation of Chick’s famous Mark V Rhodes piano. In addition to the sounds, the library also contained brief compositions played by Chick. Chick Corea’s career embraced both jazz and rock and he did much to introduce one to the other without alienating either. No small feat. Not only will Chick Corea’s influence live on in his recorded music, the Chick Corea Academy was established recently as an entity to both pass on his vast knowledge of performance techniques, arranging and composition, and also as a place to foster creativity in others. While we’re sad to reflect on his passing, it’s wonderful that he was able to establish a platform where not only his music but his musicianship can be preserved for generations to come. Our condolences to Chick’s family, friends and the many great musicians who worked with him. But also let’s celebrate what this humble and remarkable man was able to create in his lifetime as he returns to forever. MM |
