I dont want to lose my patches I created, so I rather make sure I know exactly what the correct procedure is.

I used the software from Yamaha to back up patches in the past, and to me it was dangerous as there is a lot of syncs that can happen and you easily overwrite the motif patches with what is in the software and you lose all your work. It bit me before.
I dont even want to start the software anymore as it could sync on startup, which is an irresponsible feature imo.

So my question is. How do I set up the software or maybe way better a flash disk backup option if it exists to ONLY READ patches from the motif with No WRITING to the motif.
I dont want to take risks trying what is in the manual as it bit me before, probably because I misunderstood something. The risk is not worth the damage.

Also, what I cannot figure out from the manual is if ALL patches in voice perform master can be downloaded or if some can never be backed up.
And if some patches can never be backed up .. which are they?

Alternatively,
Is there non yamaha backup software available anyone know of that is a bit less dangerous to use ?

thanks

Saving an “All” file directly to a USB flash drive backs up ALL User data - User Voices and Arps, Performances, Songs, Patterns, Masters, Utility mode (System) data, and if desired Samples/Waveforms in memory at the time. Preset Voice data isn’t backed up because it’s always available in ROM.

The SAVE operation won’t harm your data. Of course, if you accidentally LOAD something instead, that’s another matter.

That is good news that I dont have to use the software.
Just for reference:
Is the flash backup more complete than the software backup ?
Does the software only back up part of the Motif patches ?

Is there any way that I can view the patches on the flash disk to make sure my patches are there ?
I dont have another motif I can test the flash backup contents and definately dont want to test it by uploading to my Motif I backed up.

What do you do to verify the backed up patches on the flash disk.?
Can the flash disk be read by the software. ?
That would be a great use of the software as it does not need to be connected to the Motif.

If by “the software backup” you’re referring to the Yamaha Editor, then yes.

Here’s one possible solution:

I will attempt flash disk backup. that was very helpful thanks.
Once I am sure that is backed up, I will try the editor

Here is the setup I configured to use the editor safely to backup with software.
Does it look right to make sure I ONLY download and no uploads take place. ?

Unless you actually need to do editing, saving files directly from the XS to a flash drive might prove to be a more comprehensive choice.

The Sync settings you chose should ensure that data will flow only from the XS to your computer.

Thank you. You are the ACE as usual.
I really appreciate your kind help.
I feel a bit more confident about the backups now.
I could never figure out from the manual exactly what will be backed up.
You obviously know more.
The flash option is the way to go as it can resolve last minute problems very quickly if you are playing live, merely by a flash upload,

You’re welcome, and thanks for the kind words.

An all/X0A file, especially if saved with samples, will back up and allow restoration of all of your User data - but of course, it’s not necessary for the entire file to be loaded if only some of the data is needed. Other files containing less data (all Voice, Song, etc.) could optionally be saved. Any of the files can be copied to computer as a further backup.
