Some years ago I plugged a new synth into the mixer. The sound was terrible, like how you describe it. I checked many things to find out what was wrong. Then I discovered that in the mixer on both channels, L and R, the panning was set to 0…
I hope that your problem is as simple as mine was.

In Voice Mode: Utility -> Voice -> MEQ
In Song / Pattern Mode: Mixing -> Edit -> MEQ

You can also adjust it using the Computer Editor, its right on the top
