Hi, guys.  I run song sequences on the XS7 with backing tracks for my duo.  Song file in question has 14 songs, and memory is about 2/3 in use.  When I navigate to one of the songs, its title appears, the event bars load, and then the event bars disappear.  Don’t even get a chance to enter play mode, so it can’t be an embedded erase event or anything like that.

Note: I’ve never done OS upgrades… the vast majority of the time, they never apply to me (arpeggiator/external LFO synch and the like).  Is it time?  Anyone seen this behavior or have any ideas?  Thanks!

I’ve never experienced what you’ve described. On the other hand, I keep the OS of my Motifs updated, so perhaps there was a problem with an earlier version.

I suggest that you download the most recent update (version 1.60)…
http://download.yamaha.com/file/21001
...read the Readme file, and determine which OS version your XS has installed. You could then read about the significant number of problems that were fixed in any OS updates that would apply to your XS.

However, you might want to just do the update. Besides all the potential fixes, there have been new features added over the years. Examples are those with versions 1.50 and 1.10…

...and those with version 1.60…

Please let us know if the problem is resolved.

Will do, thanks much.  After taking full backups, of course :-)

Indeed - as instructed in the Readme file, of course.  :-)

Well, I went through it.  Upgrade successful, restored all user voices and performances.  Still have the disappearing song problem :-(

Going to try Yamaha tech support tomorrow.

Were the sequences originally recorded as Songs on the XS, or otherwise?

Yep, I did them all by hand natively on the XS.  Which is why this is really bummin’ me out; I’ve gotten really comfortable with its sequencer :-)

Strange.

How are you loading the Song file? If not from a USB drive, try that.

Is anything connected to the XS via MIDI (USB, mLAN/FW)? If so, disconnect and try again.

If neither of the above have any effect…
If you’re willing to post a file with a Song that exhibits the problem, I’d like to look at it and try to determine what’s happening.

Have always loaded directly from a USB flash drive.  Nothing’s connected as far as MIDI, mLAN, or anything.  Tried to attach the song file but it just clocked for a few seconds and won’t post, not sure why.

The file can be attached if you ZIP it first.

I’ve downloaded it twice. The unzipped .X0S will not load. Illegal File! report.

Agreed. The file is damaged.

I inspected View.X0S with a hex editor. It seems that all of the bytes that should have a hex value of “00” (NUL character) have been replaced with “20” (space character).

For curiosity, I used the hex editor to replace all “20” bytes with “00”. That “repairs” the incorrect bytes, but also changes the ones that were supposed to be “20”. I was able to load the “View” Song from the resulting file - it shows five tracks, with these Voices:
Tacky
Round Wound
Phase Strings AS1
Orchestra Hits
Light Pad

There’s no sequence data displayed in the tracks, not even momentarily. However, that might be due to the bytes that should have been “20” being changed to “00”.

The problem with the posted file is likely due to improper creation/encoding of the ZIP. I suggest trying again, using a different ZIP utility, and verifying that the resulting ZIP file is valid before posting it.
