It’s been years since I done anything with old school midi.  What benefits would I have in a live band scenario?

If you have need for additional polyphony or layering/splitting, or more sequencer capacity, such a connection might be useful.

Yeah it’s the layering/splitting that would interest me.

Setting up Zones in Master mode can provide very good control for that purpose. See:
