hi, I bought a (mio) midi to usb cable, downloaded the latest driver for mac, installed it, turned local control off in “Utility”, set up (mio) as midi conection in Ableton… I tried many variants but I failed, I was thinking to get a controller, but I think I should be able to use my XS as a controller.. what could I be doing wrong?? Thanks! |

Welcome to the forum. Yes, your XS should be usable as a controller. iConnectivity claims PC and Mac plug’n’play operation (no drivers required) for the mio. Therefore, if you’ve set up Ableton correctly, the only suggestion I can think of offhand is to make sure that Utility mode MIDI In/Out is set to ”MIDI”. See page 268 of the XS Owner’s Manual. (This assumes operation of your XS is normal when Local Control is “on”.) |

It’s always nice to have a new member.

Your first screen capture relates to audio setup. Please note that the Motif XS does only MIDI over 5-pin or USB connections, not audio. The mLAN16E2 FireWire interface (optional with the XS6 and XS7, built in with the XS8) handles both MIDI and audio, as does the more recent FW16E. Is there a reason you chose to use the mio, rather than a USB cable and the Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver appropriate for your computer/OS? Connecting as you are, the DAW will see the mio. Selecting Remote mode on the XS will allow it to act as a Mackie Control surface.
You might find these helpful:
I’m not an Ableton user, so hopefully a member who uses it will add to this discussion. |

thanks, I understand the difference better now. the mio iconnectivity was the only Midi to usb cable they had at the shop… I just want to use the keyboard as a controller, the computer doesn’t respond at all, doesn’t seem to recieve the midi data. I tried other VST libe Absynth and it also doesn’t work… what should I try or do? another cable? .. |

A standard USB 2.0 A-male to B-male cable will connect the TO HOST USB port of the XS to your computer, and costs a lot less than a mio.
This is the type of USB cable required....
You’d also have to install the correct USB-MIDI driver for the XS and your computer/OS.
The necessary USB-MIDI driver can be downloaded here:
Of course, MIDI In/Out in Utility mode should be reset to USB, and [STORE] the change. Once the correct USB-MIDI driver is installed, properly configured applications should see the XS. See page 43 of the XS Owner’s Manual (http://download.yamaha.com/file/10074) for details. The MIDI channels and MIDI ports section beginning on page 43 and continuing on page 44 is important - note Port 2 is for Remote Control of a DAW. Pages 51-54 cover Remote operation. |

great! it’s working ... thank you very much. I have to give back the cable now xD I have another question, is it possible to use the arpeggio functions of the XS with the samples on the computer? |

It works great. The modulation wheel works and also the touchpad… however, I would be interested to know if its possible to use some of the other knobs of the XS on a VST like Absynth. I set “Mackie Control” in Ableton settings, and tried Remote on off, but all I got were weird uncontrolled piano sounds and no changes when I turned the knobs… it’s pretty good already but if I could make that happen it would be out of this dimension. Also… if I could get the XS arpeggiator to arpeggiate the samples in Absynth or other VST it would be great Image Attachments

I’m not sure exactly what you want to do, but hopefully these will help:

yessss about the arpeggio, it was helpful, I got it working. Thanks again. Um… the other question was about “Mackie control” and remote control ... right now it seems only the MOD WHeel and the touchpad work when it comes to adding effects to the sounds in the VST, can other knobs be activated? if so.. how? |

Great!

Your description leads me to believe you don’t have the Port assignments correct. As I mentioned previously, that’s important…
Port 2 data going to the tone generator instead of the remote function will cause notes to be played when buttons are pressed while in Remote mode. Unfortunately, I don’t know the specifics of setting up Ableton. Perhaps an Ableton user will offer some suggestions, or trial and error might get you there. |

I did some Googling, and found this…

I hope one of the above does the trick. |
