Good day.
I have a same issue: How to connect XS8 to Macbook Pro via FireWire.

I read this topic and tried to make all this steps. Something went wrong.

Basic statement:
- Yamaha XS8 with 2 firewire ports
- FW cable (it cost 8$, perhaps it is a problem?)
- MacbookPro with Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter (made by Apple)

I downloaded and installed this firmware and drivers:
- moxs160.zip (Motif XS8 firmware 1.60, ~250Mb). Installed from flashcard on Yamaha + reboot+Factory reset.
- mac_fw_v175.zip (Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver, ~14Mb). Installed on Mac + reboot + . Issue: Driver does not see XS8 (empty screen). I also allowed Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver to control my computer in Security&Privacy;. I don’t know why.
- motif_xs_editor_sa_vst_166_mac (Standalone Editor for Yamaha). Installed. It works fine with USB cable. But I think it’s an issue with firewire: I don’t see pushing keys while I playing on XS. But I can manage XS’s Modes (Voices, Song, Pattern) through Editor directly.
- motif_xs_extension_161_mac. Installed. I don’t understand what is it and how to check it work.
- IEEE1394_Firmware_Updater_V107-2_mac. I doesnt start because of 2 reasons.
1. Could not open the data file. I downloaded it twice from different websites (Ru, ENG Yamaha).
2. Just doesnt start.

Does anybody can help me?

Hi Fromby,

After your factory reset ensure you go back and put the correct settings and store them, otherwise they will be lost on reboot.

Firewire settings should be as follows:-

Press Utility > F1 (General) >Set the IEEE1394 driver to FW
Press Store

Utility > F5 (Control) > Set the Interface midi in/out to MLAN
Press Store.

That should be the settings on the XS.
I have my XS8 running in MBP running sierra.

Hope it helps.
Troy…

I did it, certainly.

I set is as “mLan”. Is it right?

The driver you installed won’t work correctly with FW until the IEEE1394 firmware is updated to version 1.07.

- IEEE1394_Firmware_Updater_V107-2_mac. I doesnt start because of 2 reasons.
1. Could not open the data file. I downloaded it twice from different websites (Ru, ENG Yamaha).
2. Just doesnt start.

You could try downloading it from:
http://download.yamaha.com/search/product/?site=usa.yamaha.com&category_id1=16277&product_id=106375
I had no problem unzipping the V107-2 Mac updater from there. Since I don’t own a Mac, I can’t verify anything beyond that, other than the contents seem to all be there.

Once unzipped, read and carefully follow the instructions in Update_mac_en.pdf.  Note that the Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver must be properly installed in order for the IEEE1394 updater to run.

If you still have a problem…
Which OS version is installed on your Mac?

What do you mean?

Should I uninstall Yamaha Stainberg FW driver? And start installation from IEEE1394 updater?
What is a right sequence installation?

Be sure the driver you installed is correct for the OS version on your Mac.

Please read the instructions in Update_mac_en.pdf.
System Requirements on page 2 shows driver requirements.

If you follow the instructions, there shouldn’t be a problem doing the update.

If you still aren’t successful, I suggest that you contact Yamaha Support in your country.

Macbook Pro OS is 10.12.2 (16C68).
I read instruction several times.

A Macintosh computer equipped with the following conditions:
One of the following drivers is installed and works properly on the computer.
- YamahaSteinbergFWDriver
- mLANDriver/mLANTools

How to check that driver YamahaStainbergFW works properly?

Thanks )))

You have apparently installed the correct YSFW driver for the Mac OS you’re running. To verify, go to System Preferences on the Mac, and look for the Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver. If not there, the driver isn’t installed. If there, make sure the proper version is listed under the “About” tab.

Please also read for_MOTIF_XF_user_en.pdf in the for_MOTIF_XF_user folder. It has a Setting up on the computer section.

With XS OS 1.60 (or OS 1.50), and a properly functioning mLAN16E2 (or FW16E), you should be able to go to [UTILITY] > [F1](General) > [SF4]{Auto Load) and set IEEE1394 Driver = FW.

I suggested that because failed installation of the FW update can sometimes damage the mLAN16E2.

I uninstalled all applications and drivers (excluding Yamaha firmware) and started from scratch.

1. Yamaha Steinberg FW driver. There is a result in attachment.
What I do wrong?

OS 10.12.2 (16C68)
Archive Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver V1.7.5
Downloaded from official web-site.

When you are using the Motif XS with the Yamaha Steinberg FW driver (YSFW) you need to verify the following settings in your Motif XS:
Press [UTILITY]
Press [F1] GENERAL
Press [SF4] AUTO LOAD
Ensure that the IEEE1394 Driver = FW

I see IEEE1394 driver as a mLAN. Is it the same?
