The audio quality wasn’t that great in the video........

Just got back from attending the local demo by this guy in the UK. I currently use a MOX6 (XS voicing of course) and I can confirm that, ‘in the flesh’ so to speak the Montage is in a different league. There have been a lot of comments about You Tube Montage demos not doing justice to the sound of the Montage. Those comments are true. It is a very, very impressive sounding instrument....
Here in Dorset, the demo was in two parts. The Yamaha specialist demonstrator showed some of the ‘newer’ sounds - including some of the FM possibilities. Some of those sounds are like nothing I’ve heard anywhere else.. some amazing sounds.
The second part was more a ‘player’ type demo from Josh Phillips. Some very impressive sounds there as well.

Also a chance - albeit only a brief one . to try the Montage 8 for myself.

Took about 10 seconds to decide that I shall be getting one to replace my current MOX6/P105 setup......

Wait a minute, who are those within the Montage market primarily and this is not even in English? Makes no sense to me. “Auto translate” said something like “this horse blows wind badly super knob go blinky, blinky eat dirt kronos” or that’s all I could make out at the moment.

Oh, my. He used a slider other than the SuperKnob. He’s going to be in SO much trouble with the Yamaha police.

I thought that one was the most informative so far. I really like the search by voice name facility, I wish I could do that on my MOXF !

[...]I really like the search by voice name facility, I wish I could do that on my MOXF !

While you can’t do it on your MOXF, you can search by name with your MOXF and a computer. The Melas MOXF Total Librarian has a Search function under the Edit menu. It finds the name(s) that match the search term(s) you enter, and lists category, number, and bank. It works even in the demo version.

Thanks that’s good to know. I’m going to buy a new laptop but waiting for the new MacBook Pro to be announced before buying. Once I’ve got a new one I will definitely purchase the melas software

I can’t tell much about these Kronos/Montage comparisons but some seem to demonstrate a clearer, cleaner, more fundamental tone on the Montage. The demonstrator spent more time on the Kronos in some videos tweaking the sound. Kronos is more processed sounding I thought. Of course, you have the option to process the Montage however you like but the quality of the basic waveform is the key for the AWM2 engine. There was one comparison, piano I think, where the hard key strike layer on the Kronos was dull or missing and the Montage dominated. The organ might have been better on the Kronos but I expect an organ world expansion pack forthcoming for Montage.

I don’t think the default ‘fast’ rotary speaker speed on the Montage Hammond organ sim does it any favours at all. It’s much too fast (the default preset value is over 8Hz, IIRC) It just makes the simulation a little bit comical, IMHO.
I’ve only had the chance to try the Montage briefly after our local demo here in the UK (no shipping here yet!) and I commented on that to the Yamaha rep. He showed me that it was adjustable of course, and slowing it down to a more ‘normal’ 6Hz or 6.5Hz makes a big difference. There is quite a range for all the rotary speaker parameters (page 145 in the Data List shows the details) but I haven’t found a picture of the relevant ‘editing’ screen that the rep showed me in the Reference Manual yet.

There is just so much going on here.... I’m sure even experienced Yamaha users are going to take a while to discover all the potential of the Montage.
The other thing - which is now being commented on more now the Montage is shipping - is just how much better it sounds ‘in the flesh’ as it were, than on You tube clips.

I remember that comment you made. I’ll look for that menu and see what I can find out.
