What a year this is turning out to be. Prince dead at the age of just 57. Prince was a superlative, all-round musician. He didn’t just play all the parts through vanity or self-indulgence so much as because he could rip on guitar or keyboards or drums and simply knew how he wanted his records to sound and got there via the most direct route.

First saw Prince at The Lyceum in London in 1981 with no more than 150 people - utterly blown away by this Hendrix-meets-James-Brown like figure dressed in, well, not very much, in front of us. Last time was at the Shark Tank in San Jose with Prince playing in the round flanked by a large assortment of players mostly playing Motifs - names blacked out, as was his preference on stage.

A consummate player, performer, writer and producer, Prince really truly will be greatly missed.
