Anyone ever considered that Yamaha might have wanted to enter the plug in market like Korg’s Legacy plug ins and Roland’s Plug Out series, AS WELL as aim at the laptop musician market like Novation did?

So they came up with Reface:

1 - It is immune to software piracy and does not require expensive copy protection systems by being hardware.
2 - It gives Yamaha an angle in to that bouncy toy market Dave mentioned.
3 - it could also be used as a module for anyone else.
4 - The mini keys are at least a way of playing them on their own. Not the best way, granted.

If you hate them already, you surely can’t ignore that kind of business sense.

That’s basically quadruple usage.

All good points philwoodmusic.  I have nothing disparaging to say about the Reface line.  Mini keys are just not my cup of tea.  I am sure there are many who are fine with mini, however!

The entire reface series are based on SCM (Spectral Component Modelling) first introduced on the CP1.

SCM is actually an umbrella term for the suite of Yamaha’s latest modelling technologies, as explained by lead developer Toshifumi Kunimoto:

Athan Billias also explained that the synth models are capable of true physical modelling without the use of multi-layered samples:

Kunimoto is the father of SCM, VCM, FDSP, AN1, the infamous VP1, and VL1:
