Since the XS forum is still not back, I thought I’d post about how to view certain content from that forum that a Google search turns up, if Google has cached the page.

You can use…
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:
...immediately followed by the URL of what you’re looking for.

Let’s say you wanted to see…
http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/462856/
...but Motifator can’t produce it.

You could use Google this way:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/462856/

If the thread covers multiple pages, you will need to use the URL of the page you want to see in the same manner.

i saw the google page and understand how that works, but i’m wondering how we’d find out the URL that Motifator can’t produce?  Following your quote:

...but Motifator can’t produce it.

There are a number of threads I’d love to see but have no idea what number they are or the URL.  Am I missing something with what your are suggesting?
thanks

Hi richie1027, a little additional info...for when you are searching for an XS page without an actual page address:

In This Thread 5pinDIN points out how to search on GOOGLE by keywords/Forum member names...or a combination thereof:

A Google search targeted at Motifator is done like this:

search terms site:www.motifator.com

For example:

Forum bug site:www.motifator.com

If you do this, you will get a classic GOOGLE search page result, and you will see a green sub-link(s) below the main link results of you search...which is typical.  At the end of the green sub-links is (generally) a green drop-down arrow, which is a cached page and can be selected.

If the search-result entry is for an XS page, the main link will not work...but that green cached-page arrow will get you there.

Unfortunately, I believe this will only get you the first page of the thread...but I don’t know that for certain.

I posted this previously, but it bears repeating…

You can use Google to search Motifator, like this:
search terms site:www.motifator.com

For example the search…
XS dimm memory site:www.motifator.com
... returns these XS forum hits:
http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/460232/
http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/465698/
... but result in “You are not authorized to perform this action”

However…
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/460232/
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.motifator.com/index.php/forum/viewthread/465698/
...are cached and can be seen.

EDIT: While I pulled together the above, cmayhle posted. Between the two of us, I hope the concept is clear.

That’s correct, but if you click on a link to a page that follows the first one, and get its URL, you can append it to
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:
and that should bring up the cached second (third, etc.) page.

The nice thing is now we know that Bad_Mister will still be answering questions about the XS in 2038…

Thanks, Jerry, and I wish you healthy longevity too - but I’m no “spring chicken”. It wouldn’t surprise me, however, if my Motifs were still playable even if I wasn’t the one tickling the keys.

5pD,

Let me tell you a great story.

Back in the late 50’s/60’s and 70’s there was a famous Birmingham TV personality by the name of Sterling Brewer.

My older brother Jack (who lives with me and my family) has a Grandfather Clock that stopped working, so he looked up Clock Repair in the Yellow Pages (do all Forum Members know what that is?) and called a Company called Classic Clock Restoration to make an Appointment for the next day.

So the next day there is a door knock, Jack opens the door, and lo and behold, it’s Sterling Brewer!

Mr. Brewer is 95 years old now but looks the same as he did in the 50’s/60’s/70’s (really, but not really, but really....you know what I mean :)).

We tell Mr. Brewer how long we’ve been big fans of his, that we basically grew up with him as part of our daily lives and that we were both amazed at how great he still looked.

Mr. Brewer tell us his secret is that he stays very active (he even drives a School Bus during the School Year) always thinks young and is truly appreciative of having such a long, blessed life.

At that point Jack tells Mr. Brewer that he had just turned 70 in March and was so, so upset that he was getting so old.

Without missing a beat, Mr. Brewer says “Ah Jack, what I wouldn’t give to be 70 again, those were the good old days!!”.

Later,

Jerry

Maybe this is a plot by Yamaha to force everybody with an XS to upgrade to an XF, probably just before they come out with the XF’s successor… :-)

The moderators are being very quiet on this - when can we expect the XS forum back?

The fact that it’s been this long without recovery cannot be a good thing.  My guess is there is an issue with the backups and some type of data corruption impeding a clean restore.  In the past, I’ve managed business critical web portal infrastructure. Database crashes happen, fortunately it is a rare occurrence.  But not being able to restore data within 24 hours would be catastrophic and any data /transaction loss a major issue.  I sympathize with the motifator team. This is a bad IT nightmare.
