Piano Realism Pack from new company Digital Studio Designs offers an amazing new perspective on digital piano voicing and sound design.

With versions tailored specifically to S90ES and S90XS (in addition to releasing versions for all current model Motifs), Piano Realism Pack is, in the first instance, based on an extensive voice library of acoustic piano ‘artifacts,’ from the bumps, thuds and thumps that occur when you use the foot pedals on an acoustic instrument, the felt hammers, string resonance and more.

These new voice ‘attributes’ are primarily designed to be used in Performance mode in combination with the S90ES/XS’s many wonderful acoustic piano samples already resident in the instrument.

But this is just the beginning. Included with Piano Realism Pack is software that Digital Studio Designs has developed to tie your physical pedal movements (using an appropriate pedal such as the Yamaha FC3) to the activation of these piano voice-enhancing ‘voices’. Yes indeed: pedal information to Note On! The result is truly magical in that the S90ES/XS’s already top class piano voices really do feel and sound like they are coming from an acoustic, not a ‘digital’ piano.

The basic Studio Edition of Piano Realism Pack comes with the pedal software. This is a real-time process so you will need to remain connected to your computer in order to maintain the process. Mindful of the fact that many players are still not inclined to use their laptops on stage, Digital Studio Designs went on to produce a Live Edition, which includes a microprocessor-inclusive MIDI cable that you simply connect from your MIDI Out back into your MIDI In and so removing the need for computer connection.

And there’s still more. For S90ES owners, although the S700-based pianos (e.g. “Natural S”) are stretch-tuned, the CFIII-based piano “Full Grand” is not. The Piano Realism Pack includes a song mix that stretch-tunes CFIII piano to more accurately simulate the tuning of the popular P250 piano.

Stretch tuning is known to contribute to the “singing” quality of concert grand pianos, and was added as a feature to the CFIII pianos in the S90XS and beyond.

Digital Studio Designs has made a lengthy study of the ‘real sound’ of an acoustic piano and you can read more about this wonderful new concept plus hear ‘before and after’ demos on the product page here in the Shop.

Please explain how this can work with S90ES and S90XS that do not have a RAM. If the waveforms are stored in the computer, than probably some latency should occur. Or they only add some “short” waveforms, which only produce the “instrument mechanics” sounds? Can such “enriched” piano voice be assigned to a part in a MULTI?

It is also interesting whether a similar thing can be done for other instruments like strings, woodwinds and ensemble voices.

The additional sounds are generated by the S90, not in the computer.

The “Live” version has a MIDI processor that is patched between MIDI OUT to MIDI IN. The software only “Studio” version does the same thing, but in software (and costs less, too). Take a look at the pics in the shop to see the processor box.

Just to confirm, the interesting thing about this library for S90 owners is that while it would ‘seem’ to be a new set of samples of course it is not because you can’t load new samples into an S90! The new ‘sounds’ are programmed but they are based on very carefully analyzed components of what an actual acoustic piano sounds like when you’re playing it. The software and/or the MIDI cable then converts pedal information into Note On (and in fact Note Off) information so that these enhancement sounds ‘appear’ to emanating from the motion of the pedal - as indeed they would on an actual acoustic piano. Clever stuff!

But when the MIDI device is connected to the instrument’s MIDI ports, how can MIDI data be recorded into a sequencer?

Perhaps, some YouTube videos might help…

You can both daisy chain and use a MIDI merge device if you need.

It looks very good, but I’m not convinced yet about the product. If possible, please make a youtube movie about the product. I’m not going to spend $130,- on 3 small demo songs.

Hang in there, mattje. Your point is well taken. With a new product like this YouTube videos are essential and we are working on doing those as we speak. In the meantime, you can learn more about the product at http://www.digitalstudiodesigns.com.

I’m still curious for the Piano Realism Pack. Are there already Youtube videos available?
