Does anyone here have this combination of audio interface / mixer and Cubase.  The n-series mixers are supposed to have tight integration with Cubase but I seem to recall that it isn’t as simple as plug in play.  I currently have Cubase 6 (but plan on upgrading to Cubase 7 shortly).  After installing the drivers and whatnot, will Cubase automatically detect the n8 and sync up for the transport controls that are built into the unit?

It’s the “drivers and whatnot” that cause it to detect and automatically sync up with Cubase… the “Cubase Ready” light on the n8 front panel will assure you all is connected and ready to go.
