Hi,

I recently added FW16E card on to motif XF8
and installed YSFW driver in to my mac book pro.

Now How do I record ( together )any existing song which has 16 tracks.

or

any performance which has more than two tracks in Motif
to Logic.

Do I have to create external midi track as per track requirement ?

I am connected to mac with firewire cable from motif xf8

Any help or link will be great .

Are you ferring to recording MIDI or audio? Follow this link to a tutorial. It was created for the XS and the mLAN with YSFW driver but, it is still relevant to the XF and the FW16E. Do not use the attached environment however. Anyway, It goes through the recording of both Audio and MIDI via the firewire connection.

Check back…

Hi motif8mine,

Thank you for your response:)

I had gone through PDF file and it seems to me working
but there are couple of problem which I need to ask you.

Here is What I did:

1) I created 4 external midi track in logic.

2) Set every tracks port to “ mlan” in my case “XF8 FW”

3) Set every track channels 1 to 4 accordingly.

Now I have XF editor opened up and it perfectly in sync with motif.

I have one pattern roughly made consisting of 4 tracks.

I need to record that to motif

Now when I press record in logic and then playing through transport bar at motif it records 4 track but with different instruments.

So Do I have to change prg number according to motif instruments setting ?

I tried it , it kind of works but confusing with prg numbers and motif instrument number.

Or Is there any XF 8 environment which i have to use for this?

Also If I want to record the same tracks from motif as audio
( all four tracks together)

what are the procedure I have to follow?

I have Focusrite saffire 6 usb audio interface.
( two input )

Once again thank you for your prompt reply.

No, that’s what the XF Editor is for. Or, just save them in the XF itself...

Also If I want to record the same tracks from motif as audio
( all four tracks together)

what are the procedure I have to follow?

That tutorial goes through the steps of recording audio… It’s not necessary to use the Focusrite as you already have the FW16E…

Btw, I found this post where Bad_Mister describes in detail how to record the audio from a perfromance into a DAW, howbeit Cubase. Anyway the steps are the same. Where he mentions setting the audio input in Cubase:

Track 1 = Stereo IN
Track 2 = Stereo IN 2
Track 3 = Stereo IN 3
Track 4 = Stereo IN 4

you would set them in Logic as input 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, etc… (in stereo tracks, of course). As an fyi, the comments concerning Pro Tools are dated as PT9 now supports mLAN or FW16E technology…

Hi motif8mine,

When I record audio( 4 track ) from motif through FW16 to Logic
Its works fine but when I try to do both i.e audio and
midi some of the track instrument gets changed.

Incase of only audio recording I kept FW16 studio manager’s
output orderwise 1) L&R;2)FW1&2;3) FW3&4;, 4) FW5$6

but If I follow same rules for midi and audio my first
midi channel got no input.

There must be something wrong from my side.

Should I keep 1) FW1&2;2)FW3&4;3)FW4&5;4)FW5&6;as for midi recording?

BTW thanks for previous link:)

The Audio settings are fairly irrelevant as it relates to recording MIDI.

Check your following two settings:

1) Preferences>MIDI>Reset Messages> Send Used Instrument Setting On Reset: (Makes sure it is unchecked)

2) Settings>MIDI>General>Send After Loading Project>Used Instrument Settings:  (Makes sure it is unchecked)

Also, the following the XS’ Quick Setup feature Must be changed based on what type of recording you are doing as follows…

motif8mine - 17 July 2009 12:32 PM

The Quick Setup feature of the XS ... automatically adjusts MIDI Sync and Local On settings via the Sequencer Setup button. Press ‘F3’ for ‘Quick Setup’ and choose:

Option #1 (Stand Alone operation- not using mLAN
{or computer} );

Option #2 (Recording internal sequencer to computer);

Option #3 (Recording ‘live’ to computer
{not using XS’ sequencer} ); or,

Option #4 (Recording Arpeggio to computer) depending on how you are recording into Logic.

Hi motif8mine,

I have attached two screen shot.
One for studio manager and other for logic

My mlansetp is set for number 3 option
i.e “recording to computer”

Still I couldn’t solve problem.

I followed earlier steps which you mentioned .

The problem is my original first track in motif
got changed after doing midi channel set up in logic.

That is in studio manager you can see my 4 tracks .

When I select first midi track in logic and assign channel 1
and other three tracks numberwise 2, 3 4.
my first track in studio manager changes to something else prg.

but when I select first midi track and assign channel 2 its
just matches the sound with motif original track.

Without knowing what specific performance you are working with, it’s difficult to say at this point. First, I’d want to check and see if the MIDI contains program change commands. Also, what happens after you correct the voice change in the XS or the XS Editor?

Just thought of one other thing: in the track inspector, untick the Program box(s)

Hi,

Even If I change in xs editor it doesn’t take properly.

I checked with program untick box also but no result.

All midi track goes to same name ID i.e “ XF motif”

That is the result. Unticking that box prevents Logic from transmitting Program Change messages.. If you are still having problems you are going to need to 1) make sure you are starting with a new empty project. If that doesn’t solve it, 2) trash Logic’s Preferences (com.apple.logic.pro.cs & com.apple.logic.pro.plist).
