The S90 and the Motif Classic have the same tone generator and effects processing. In addition they share almost all of the sample waveform ROM. The S90 has an additional 30MB of sample waveforms dedicated to the triple-strike S700 piano voices that are not present in the Motif Classic. Given this great similarity, you’d have thought that Yamaha would have allowed either of these instruments to be able to save and load voice files in the other instruments formats directly. Unfortunately they didn’t do this. If you are comfortable using a hex editor to edit binary files, you can manually convert between the file formats. It’s a very simply edit that involves changing two bytes in each file and renaming them. The format difference is in bytes 4 and 5 ...
* The S90 - w4v and w4e file begins with....... ‘A0682 VOICE’ 41 30 36 38 32 20 56 4f 49 43 45
To change an Motif (Classic) VOICE EDITOR file pair to a S90 VOICE EDITOR file pair, simply change the two bytes in the *.w2e file and rename it *.w4e and rename the *.w3e to *.w5e.
As to Performances, there exists no similar conversion tool. However, the bulk format for performances between the Motif and S90 is exactly the same, so once you’ve created your performances on the Motif, you could bulk dump it to a SysEx Librarian program (such as midiox) and then bulk dump them into the S90. For more information on this approach, see Instructions for Saving Individual Performances. Regards, Brad Weber Good Luck. Post back here if you have further questions. |
