“One of the most underrated influencers of Fusion was Frank Zappa. I did not like jazz music but in attending his concerts and reading liner notes (remember those), I found the majority of people you are naming in this thread did fairly long stints with him… among them...” To this point,at the risk of hijacking the thread, “Fusion” was a termed coined to describe a “combination” of genras. As “I” recall it was an exploritiry period in music where as we were examining and changing social conditions,we did likewise with music. I had a conversation this week with a good friend with a site dedicated to Black Music and has been documenting much of the history of same. He maintains that there was a “Fusion” of R&B;/Soul and “Rock” music as evidenced by The Chambers Brothers,Jimi,Sly,War to name a few. There was a Jazz/Rock Fusion as evidenced by Herbie,Miles,Donald Byrd and Sun Ra, again to name a few. This was the “First Phase”. I guess one could consider Zappa in this first phase. Clearer lines began to be drawn in the “Second Phase” where you have your Weather Report,Return To Forever,Mandrill,Tower of Power,Parliment/Funkadelic, AWB,Lonnie Liston Smith,Blackbirds,Crusaders,Graham Central Station etc.Bands like Kool& The Gang,EW&F;,were also trying to “tightrope” these lines as in “Hustler’s Convention” (Kool & The Gang) and EW&F;first album Pre-Columbia (can’t think of the label right now). Before he died,Jimi was preparing to do a project with Miles Davis.Imagine that!!!!
Enough!Point is it was the ground work of where we are now in music. It is an interesting examination on rewind that, hopefully, someone will legitimately document the timeline and the events. “My” account is based on information from a Black perspective in the areas of R&B;,Soul,Gospel (yes it “is” a part of it) and Jazz. For those of you who may find this statement exclusive or racist, sorry, but the music business “has” been, and continues to be, the most racist operation in this country. I didn’t “draw” these lines, the industry did, thus, from where I have drawn “my” perspective, timeline and the events there in.
