Hi Folks, i’ve got a pretty strange problem with my recently baught fw16e in a motif xs6:
OS on pc-side is w7-64,
DAW is Cubase 9 pro, installed the VST version of the XS Editor.
This all works pretty well: i can sync the editor with the XS, i can change local on/off and so on, even if i change the track on the XS, the selected row in the VST changes.
BUT: even though in cubase and the VST, I see (3)MIDI-Ports belongig to the XS, i cannot see ANY midi data transferred, so i cannot PLAY the XS (except for local on), so no note on/ note off or controllerdata reaches cubase. neither can i get audio routed to the XS. this looks strange, as the VST seems to work well. Before i installed the fw16e, i used USB-Midi, which worked, but I need the audio-channels… any hints on this?
best,

one more thing:
i just tested the standalon XS Editor and it shows the same behaviour.
thing is: i can sync, but i never see incoming MIDI notes… strange. |

Before we get into possible Windows issues, check this XS setting…
Press [UTILITY] > [F1](General) > [SF4](AutoLoad)
If the above doesn’t help, let us know - there may be Windows driver installation issues to check. |

rehi, yes, it reads FW. (and i rebooted the XS several times, still reads FW) i already disabled Intel Speedstep in the Bios and ran different variantions of the settings of ysfwutility. what really strikes me is that the syncing from the Editor is working! just no audio/no midi. |

OK, next we can look into driver installation. With both the XS and computer booted, and FW cable connected… Open the Win 7 Device Manager.
Under Sound, video and game controllers you should find the following:
None of them should have a yellow exclamation point next to it. If any do, the driver installation for that device isn’t functional. Click on the device, choose to update the driver (or whatever Win 7 calls it). A window should open - choose not to allow Windows to connect to Windows Update. Click “Next”, then choose to install the software automatically. Click “next” - that usually will do the trick. Let us know what you find. |

just two more things: i can set several thins from the editor, e.G. when i turn the arpeggio-switch in the SW-Editor, the light on the XS lights!, same for the AF switches and the knob controls.
as far as i could see, this changes, when the deviceID is set not to match.

The four entries read exactly as you stated.
nothing to do, sorry. |

Well, that seems to indicate that there is MIDI communication between the XS and computer in both directions. |

As far as Cubase goes, did you install the XS Extensions? Gute Nacht - bis Morgen. Â :-) |

As far as i remember, i just installed the VST Version of the XS Editor.
It all worked pretty well using USB.
I’ll really have to get some sleep now.

You’re welcome.
For “tomorrow"…
MOTIF XS Extension/MOTIF-RACK XS Extension Owner’s Manual:
MOTIF XS Extension V1.6.1 for Windows works for Cubase 8.0.10 “or later”, although I’m not sure than means Cubase 9.
Although written before the FW16E was available, this should mostly apply (but ignore software version numbers):
If that doesn’t resolve the problem, you might try posting at Steinberg’s forums.

rehi! i read through the docs of the Extension, the suggestion is to install them once the fw connection is up and running, which it isn’t, so I’ll leave that for later.
i just recall a small error i made yesterday:
I’ll keep you informed, if things go better then.

This should not be a complicated procedure. Try the following…
1) Make sure the IEEE1394 Driver setting is “FW”, and remains so.
I have both an XS6 and an XF6 with FW16E interfaces. They installed and are running without problem. Hopefully you’ll have a similar experience. |

there never were any exclamation points in der devicemanagers fw-devices
i never see any midi or audio ativity (e.g. in the cubase transport section) this is especially true for sampled audio, just being sent to the XS. this is completely typical for a non-working audiointerface. i see all audio I/Os, i see three MIDI ports, i can select and activate them, but they simply refuse to work. The XS-Editor VST changes settings on the XS and vice versa, but the remote-mode (Blinking remote-light on XS) does NOT work (which it did using USB).
my pc-fw card does have a VIA chipset.
