The MOTIFS have 4 voice performances.
The MONTAGE has 8 voice performances.
The MX49/61 has 16 voice performances.
I have heard alot of the MOTIFS sounds, and i have heard alot of MONTAGE sounds.
I have to say i have got some huge performance sounds out of this little MX49.
I am not saying i think the MX is better than MOTIF or MONTAGE,(sounds).
But because i can layer 16 sounds at once, the MX makes huge performance sounds.
In some areas of sound, the MX has made some of the best sounds ive ever heard on a synth.
Having 16 voice performances gives the MX a little edge in creating huge performance sounds.
MX synths are the best value synths on planet earth.
$500 bucks is a steel for the awesomeness of what they are.

The MX models do offer a lot, and I’m glad you’re happy with your MX49.

However, the Motifs aren’t as limited as you’ve suggested. For example, the XS and XF models can layer up to 16 Parts in the multitimbral modes (Song and Pattern). In addition, they can have dual Insertion Effects applied in up to eight Parts (16 total maximum), while the MX is limited to four Insertion Effects applicable in four Parts (4 total maximum).

Of course, the Motif models cost a bit more.  :-)

I never thought of looking at the (song pattern mode)of the MOTIFS and MONTAGES.
The last MOTIF i had was the original MOTIF6.
That was a few years back.
I guess i really like having everything in one mode(performance) on MX.
I also like the way i can, within a performance switch seemlesly from any of the sixteen voices.
The ease of use of MX really helps me.
I use a KRONOS sequencer to remote MX49.
The MX49 fits well into my tiny studio as well.
YAMAHA really knows synths.
Even thier inexpensive little MX kicks butt.

Since im on a praise MX kick this evening, i thought i would share my favorite MX synth video.
I live way out in the country and its a inconvienence to go into the big city overcrowded music stores.
Knowing how great YAMAHAS reputation is, i purchased my MX49 from watching utube videos.

In terms of “Motif parlance” the MX doesn’t actually have “Performance Mode.” What the MX calls Performance Mode is almost exactly the same as the Motif “Mix” mode.. sets of 16 sounds where you can switch seamlessly from one to another. So this facility was there all along in those other models, it just wasn’t so obvious, in part because the Yamaha manuals tie that mode to songs and patterns which are things that often don’t interest people who buy for live performance. But as you and Yamaha have discovered, that can actually be a better “performance” mode than Performance mode was!

The idea is explained at http://www.motifator.com/index.php/support/view/using_a_mixing_program_to_organize_your_live_setup

and the counter benefits of traditional Performance mode are discussed at
