If I open the EG/EQ tab on my XS8 I can change the AEG (VCA)settings with the ADSR knobs but if I drop the curser down to the FEG row the knobs still alter the AEG settings.
Is it possible to flip the knobs so that they change to alter the filter EG (FEG)settings?

No, those knobs are dedicated to adjusting Amplitude levels (volume).

There are three ways to adjust the FEG levels…
1) Using the XS cursor keys, highlight the Parameter and use the Data Dial to change the setting.
2) Attach a USB ASCII keyboard to the XS TO DEVICE port. Using that keyboard’s cursor keys, highlight the Parameter and change the setting with the [+]/[-] keys.
3) Run the Yamaha XS Editor and adjust using a mouse.

Actually, there’s another way to adjust FEG levels, using knobs. If a Voice isn’t already using the ASSIGN 1 and ASSIGN 2 knobs for another purpose (or that usage isn’t critical), they could be assigned via Controller Set to any two of the following…
FEG attack
FEG decay 1
FEG decay 2
FEG release
...with the choice of application to any or all of the eight Elements.
