Hi there, I recently discovered that the XS that I bought has a very wobbly cutoff controller knob.
Should have checked this ‘classic issue’ on 2nd hand synth, but it’s there and I have to deal with it.
So i wonder if it’s possible to creatie a workaround by programming the assign 1 & 2 knobs to cutoff and resonance. Off course this is possible on voice level but would take lost of time to program for all individual sounds. So I wonder if it’s possible to assign this functions to the assign 1 & 2 knobs on ‘system level’ ...
Anyone knows if this is possible? Thanks! Michiel

Yes, but only for for Voice mode - see Controller Settings on page 264 of the XS Owner’s Manual. STORE the change.

This setting will not apply to other modes.

Thanks for your fast response, storing this setting for voice mode (only) does help me out!
Kind regards, Michiel

Hmmm I can’t seem to find the cutoff and resonance function in the list of parameters that can be assigned tot assign.1 and assign 2 knob .... ?

In the data list I find the controller functions cutoff and resonance at number 99 and 100 (when I exit in voice mode this is how to assign the functions to assign knob 1 and assign knob 2). The number I can assign in the utility mode ends at 95 ... maybe I’m misging something? (are cutoff and resonance at different numbers/ places?). Hope you can help me out here ...

Cutoff and Resonance can have different names.

Cutoff is also known as “Brightness”, CC#74
Resonance is also known as “Harmonic Content”, CC#71

However, I hope you have better luck with your XS in assigning the AS1 and AS2 knobs to those numbers than I’ve had on my XF. I’ve found that there’s an apparent bug - most of the time if I set AS1 or AS2 to those functions, neither the dedicated control nor the assigned one will control the function. However, every so often (and I haven’t determined what the magic sequence is) I can set things up, and both the dedicated and assignable knobs will control things.

My XS is currently not readily accessible, so I can’t determine how it behaves under these conditions. I hope it works for you.

Unfortunately my XS6 responds like in the frist scenario you describe: the dedicated cutoff and resonance knobs don’t function anymore, and the AS1 and AS2 knobs do nothing or maybe a vague kind of reversed brightnes (AS2)…
The wobbly knob is even better ; )
I Will check if I got the latest OS update (but when it happens with the XF than I guess it’s not fixt in an XS OS update...)
It was wordt the try.

I’ve had some time to further investigate, and have come up with a workaround - if you’re willing to use a computer.

It seems that while what Yamaha calls the “fixed” controllers (such as the Cutoff and Resonance knobs) can’t be directly reassigned to AS1 and AS2, those functions do respond via MIDI. I’ve found that you can use a utility such as MIDI-OX (http://www.midiox.com/) to remap the AS knobs.

In Utility mode Controller Assign I set AS1 to CC#16 (default) and AS2 to CC#17 (default), then remapped CC#16 to CC#74 and CC#17 to CC#71 in MIDI-OX. With that remapping AS1 and AS2 function as Cutoff and Resonance controls in Voice mode.
