i would like to record the sound that i make on motif xf6 on cubase with vst editor.
i tried to press rec and after that i play in the motif, then i stop record and when i try to export mixdown and save the song as mp3 it says me that is not possible because i didn’t set left and right locators.
can anyone tell me how to set this locators in order to save my mp3 (played on the motif) in cubase?
any help will be very appreciated, thanks in advance

Here you go

And by the way the Editor will allow you to select or shape the sound voices of your instrument but it doesn’t have any relationship with exporting your Audio to MP3, you have to first record what you played in an Audio Track and after you will export it.

Greetings!

I don’t use Cubase, and the answer to your question might be dependent on the exact version you’re using.

I suggest doing a Google search, which seems to turn up several relevant hits:
http://www.google.com/search?q=cubase+left+right+locators

Conversion to MP3 depends on whether an encoder for it is included in the Cubase you have. Some versions have a limited number of demos, after which you have to purchase the encoder.

it’s very hard to offer up assistance.

I can’t really tell how your Motif is connected to your computer and Cubase for audio recording.  The options for that would be analog outputs to an interface, S/PDIF (digitally) to an interface, or you have a FW16E installed and digital audio is making its way to your computer from your Motif via firewire.

I can’t really tell if you are mistakenly presuming that the Editor is all you need to record the audio from your Motif.

I can’t really tell if you’re managing to record audio but not export it.

I can’t really tell if you are not recording audio, you don’t know that you aren’t, and you’re trying to export a blank audio track.

Learning to set the locators up could be the least of your problems.

Nothing is clear.

Thanks to all for the replies.
I am using Cubase Elements 9 with win 10 64bit, i downloaded extensions, midi-usb driver, remote controls, and i am connecting motif to pc via usb to host cable.
I set up my keyboard to “VOICE” i think to have the ports correctly mapped because the vst editor goes online but the issue i think it’s that in vsti file setup as output to assign i see only relatek mic (left and right) so i prefer not to assign nothing as outputs.
But i know this is not correct. I should have something (as output) to be able to assign in the editor setup.
When i open a new track through vst instrument, external, motif vst and add the midi track i see the editor online. When i press keys on the keyboard in voice mode (also the editor is setup in voice option) i see the keys flashing also on the editor, but when i set the locators, start pressing record and then i go playing something at the piano (e.g. full natural grand), then stop recording and try to export mixdown to a wave file in real time (that’s because i haven’t a mp3 encoder plugin) the result is a track but when i play it in any audio reader on pc (e.g. winamp) it is mute.
I figure something is missing in the output setting of the editor.
I clarify i have only mic to set into outputs and nothing else, no speakers.
I would find a way to let speakers appear on the output setting window of the editor..
If you want i attach some screens of the configuration of device/device settings/ MIDI PORT SETUP; VST QUICK CONTROLS; YAMAHA MOTIF XF; VST AUDIO SYSTEM (which is set up with generic low latency ASIO driver, and in its proper window both realtek mics and speakers are visible and active);and VST SYSTEM LINK (set up with “active” and “online” not flagged, and “midi inputs” and “midi outputs” both at value: 0 (maybe i must set up both to 1?)
Thank you again for your attention! =)

What are you using as an audio interface for Cubase?

if USB is the only connection between your Motif and your computer, you won’t be able to record audio through it, unless you in fact own a MOXF 6 which does support digital audio via USB, but you stated Motif XF 6, which doesn’t.

As I previously mentioned, with a Motif XF, there are three ways to record audio through a cable to your computer and Cubase:

1 - Motif XF Analog outputs to a separate audio interface.

2 - Motif XF S/PDIF out to a separate audio interface or equipped sound card

3 - A FW16E card and firewire cable, if you have one installed in your Motif XF 6.

Not USB, unfortunately.  USB ‘To Host’ does not carry audio on a Motif XF6

Thank you very much philwoodmusic.
Now i understand better the argument!
But can you tell me please what usb to host link allows to make with xf6 and cubase?
Moreover i will try to have a fw card but don’t know how to install it and where to buy.. moreover i think i haven’t seen in the rear part of my sinth a ieee394 connection.
Hope you can let me know better about all that.
Thank you again

Ops i have not firewire connection on my pc so ad u stated:  “2 - Motif XF S/PDIF out to a separate audio interface or equipped sound card” do you think that i can use a cable running from the digital out connector on the motif to an optical spdif out port of my pc motherboard?
Or i must run it from digital out to another connector of my pc? And if that which one i have to search for?
Thanks for your patience.

USB To host is for USB MIDI.

Regarding the S/PDIF:

Motif XF S/PDIF OUT -------------> S/PDIF IN (could be on a sound card, or audio interface.)

I’m presuming that you do not have an audio interface?

Hi Salvo,

You need to have a device connected to your computer that will capture the Audio that comes out from your Motif, You need to configure Cubase to work with that device; once you capture the audio, you’ll be able to set the locators and export the audio and later on convert it to MP3.

What device do you need?, it depends on your budget. Check these out (I don’t promote this store, but it lists a lot of Audio interfaces, in the left hand side column you could select (FireWire, Usb, etc)

https://www.sweetwater.com/shop/studio-recording/audio-interfaces/

Or you could connect your motif to your generic mic jack and record with the Asio Driver, but generic connectors and drivers usually don’t deliver the best quality. You still need to learn a lot about this computer/music world but you are in the right path.

Greetings!

I have only optical SPDIF Out Port on my PC (not in) and so i think i am stuck and cannot do anything unless i spend money on an appropriate interface =(

How would the cable in the image you uploaded solve your problems?

-----------------------------

You could do what RHproducer suggested with analog audio outputs into your generic sound card audio input.

Not the best solution, but if it’s all you have, it’s worth a go.

Also don’t forget that the Motif XF can export a Wav file to a USB thumb drive of anything you have in its onboard sequencer.

You could then import that WAV into Cubase, and at least audio from your Motif would finally be in Cubase.

So i have to buy a cable which starts at one side with two 6.3 male jacks (that i attach to L and R assignable outputs connectors on the rear of the motif) and at the end with a male 3.5 jack that i attach to my realtek onboard soundcard “line in” connector, or “mic” connector?
If it’s ok can u tell me what i have to do after? Uninstall usb midi driver and put another driver for the new connection? I mean i have to discard now the usb to host connection?

Thank you both philwoodmusic and RHproducer

I have to use:
OUTPUT L/MONO, R
or
ASSIGNABLE OUTPUT L, R ?

Can i use the second choice, since the first are reserved to the motif speakers?

Hi salvosound,

I don’t mean to be rude in any way, but it seems you’re not completely aware of the differences between MIDI and audio. This is rather basic stuff, that can have some important implications for your chosen workflow. Here’s a couple of scenarios:

1: Using Cubase as a multi-track tape deck.
Your tracks are recorded as audio data taken from your sound card’s mic/line input, and played back over the computer’s sound system. Audio latency might become an issue, but you can safely ignore MIDI this way (including the VST editor). Less to worry about now, but might become limiting later on.

2: Using Cubase as a MIDI sequencer.
Your tracks are recorded as MIDI data coming from your Motif over the USB connection. This is just note data, and not sound (which is probably why you didn’t succeed at making an MP3 earlier). During playback, the recorded MIDI note data (up to 16 instrument parts on separate MIDI channels) is sent back to your Motif, which then uses it to play the music and generate the audio. Among other things, working with MIDI allows you to edit individual notes, or even select a different sound patch for each track, after recording.

3: Using Cubase to work with both audio and MIDI tracks.
As an example, you might want to add a vocal track to your MIDI song, or include some acoustic instruments.

Also, if you’ve created a song using only MIDI tracks, Cubase can record the entire song to a separate audio track. Just select the proper audio input (the one your Motif is connected to) for this track. After recording a “master track” like this, you can export the content to e.g. the MP3 format.

I’m taking a guess that you’re focused on recording audio (1) at the moment, but please correct me if I’m wrong. :-)

If the drivers for your sound card/onboard audio are properly installed, no additional software is needed for the audio connection (it’s only the optional FW16E FireWire card that needs a dedicated audio driver on the computer side). The pictured cable is all you need to make a basic recording, really.

The assignable outputs can be used for recording, but they are only available in Performance and Song/Pattern modes. In Song/Pattern mode, you can route each of the 16 instrument parts to the assignable outputs from your Motif’s mixing menu. This menu also allows you to select instruments and effect settings for each part, and the setup can then be saved on your Motif as a song or pattern.

You should keep the USB connection for now. Although it’s not strictly needed for Cubase to record the audio coming from your Motif, you may want to make use of it later (without it, Cubase and the VST editor won’t be able to send or receive MIDI data to/from your Motif).
