Hi there. So my XF8 has been bleeding screws since I got it. It was already missing some, and I didn’t tighten the others when I bought it. D’oh.

I’d like to go to my local hardware store and buy the right screws. Are there specs for exactly what screws I need? I can eyeball them and guess, but I’d like to make sure I have the optimal length, width, and thread pattern (the twirly screwy circlies that make a screw a screw).

I’ve looked online from the yamaha site to sentaur to here and can’t find the info.

Here is a service manual.  You can look up the part number and check with Yamaha what a replacement screw spec would be.

See pages 189 and 191 of the PDF. The description gives type of head, whether tapping thread, and diameter x length (in millimeters).

Getting a precise match from a hardware store will be hit-or-miss. That’s particularly true for tapping screw threads (pitch), less so for machine screws. Bringing along some from the XF8 would likely improve the odds, but I suggest that you order the screws from Yamaha.

Same thing happens to me....I am constantly finding screws on the floor from the bottom of my XF8.

Adding toothed lock washers might help.

Thanks for the input, all. I’ll try ordering from Yamaha. I’ll probably pay extra, but better safe than sorry. I don’t want the wrong screws coming loose in my road case and scratching up the beauty that is the XF8 WH. Cheers!

I have never had an issue with screws falling out of my XF, or any of my other gear for that matter, but I sometimes find loose screws that appear to have come from my head....

Unlike the 61- and 76-key models, which have metal bottom covers, the 88-key ones have wood composite (fiberboard) bottom panels. Even if screws are properly tightened initially, that material tends to compress a bit over time and the screws will loosen. Presumably, vibration and gravity do the rest.

I’ve played one a few times, but never looked under one.

This thread was enough to make me check the screws on my XF7 though, before you pointed that out.

That would certainly loosen things a bit further.  But a few more screws loose would probably cease to be an issue at that point.
