Welcome to the forum.

You’ve posted in the forum for the Rack XS. However, what you’ve indicated as displayed doesn’t seem correct for that model.

Please verify which model you have (on the front panel above the LCD).

Tell us a bit more about what happened. Did the problem occur suddenly?

The Rack XS was introduced in 2008. Was the firmware/OS of this unit never updated?

Is there an mLAN16E2 installed? If so, remove it, disconnect any cables other than AC power, and try again to boot.

I didn’t have mLAN16E2 installed..
I was working with the motif editor (v. 1.30) inside Studio Manager (V. 2.3) on a Windows XP (SP3) PC via USB cable.
I was sending a user bank (loaded from a .X0A file) and then Motif Rack “freeze” on its old display.
i switched off the rack and then switch on again.. and it never went on again..
there is some way to return to the factory settings, so I can use my motif?
thanks
P.

and I can’t verify the firmware/OS version..
I bought it today, and I did not read the version installed on my rack.

Let’s see if your Rack XS will enter Test Mode…

1) Begin with the Rack XS power off.
2) Press and hold in the [>](cursor right), [VOICE], and [MULTI] buttons.
3) While those buttons are pressed, turn on the power.
4) Release the buttons only when “MOTIF RACK XS” is displayed.

That will take several seconds. If the TEST screen is then displayed, you’ll see the firmware level, and should be able to press [UTILITY] to do a factory reset.

Let us know what happens.

i have run the Test, and the problem was about MIDI.

Apparently something went amiss while loading the .X0A file. You might want to update the Editor from version 1.3 to 1.4, since it fixed some problems.

You can get…
MOTIF-RACK XS Editor VST V1.4.0 for Windows 7/Vista/XP(SP3) 32bit
... here ...
http://download.yamaha.com/search/product/?site=usa.yamaha.com&category_id1=16244&product_id=774999
... or here ...
http://download.yamaha.com/search/product/?site=it.yamaha.com&language=it&category_id1=16244&category;_id3=&product_id=774999

The later “Standalone” Editor versions (not requiring Studio Manager) might work with Windows XP/SP3.

pj_99 -

Firmware Version: 1.03.3

The most recent version is 1.04, available at the sites linked above. Please fully read the “Readme” file that comes with the OS update download before deciding whether you want to do the update, since improper MIDI data transfer could cause a problem.

pj_99 -

Bantents (what is this info?!?) Version 1.03.3

That should have read “Contents”. If it read “Bantents”, something might have been corrupted.

pj_99 -

so thank you very much

You’re very welcome - I’m glad your Rack XS is functional again.

ok.
only two specification:
1) i read carefully about the version of the motif editor..
the stand alone version (1.6.3) seems not compatible with XP, but maybe i can try to install it and verify.
2) i downloaded the firmware file and read the readme file and there the uprade is made with sendind a MIDI file with Cubase: in my PC I use sonar 6.0, it could work as well?
is this the only way to upgrade?

One sequencer equals another one. What matters most is the Motif XS rack is the only instrument hooked to the MIDI interface/USB cable.

Yes, that’s why I wrote that it “might” work - I’ve found that Yamaha applications sometimes work on Windows versions that they don’t list as compatible. Although I don’t have a Rack XS (I have XS and XF keyboards), I installed the Rack XS 1.6.3 Editor Standalone on my XP/SP3 computer, and it appears to run without problem.

The update file has to be sent via MIDI, but using Cubase isn’t the only way to do that. Any sequencer that you find to be reliable should work, and users have had good results with Windows Media Player.

See these threads:

Please make sure that you have no trouble sending other .MID files to the Rack XS before you attempt an OS update.

ok..
thanks for the links..
i’m a little worried about updating, but probably i will do it.

when using the editor (stand-alone or within studio manager using the USB cable), how can I do to play the rack? I mean, is it possible to connect the extarnal keyboard in some way to listen to the loaded sounds, or edited sounds?
(maybe there is some specific post?)
thank you
P.

If you’re concerned, perhaps you could skip the update. From the “Readme"…

[V1.03 to V1.04]
Improved the operational stability of the electronic components.
-This update may solve problems in which the instrument might not start in low-temperature environments.

...so unless you experience such a problem, it might not be important.

See MIDI channels and MIDI ports, specifically the Port 3 information, on page 18 of the Owner’s Manual. With MIDI In/Out set to USB, data from a MIDI controller connected to the Rack’s MIDI-In will transmit on Port 3. Any software that allows rerouting of that Port 3 data to Port 1 should work.

From one of my posts in a previous thread…

5pinDIN -

I downloaded and installed the Rack XS Editor. I don’t have a Rack XS, but the Editor didn’t care (for port setup purposes, not editing). I was able to configure the ports so that an external keyboard (connected to my XF’s 5-pin MIDI-In) is able to play the XF while it’s in USB MIDI mode with the Editor running. You should be able to do the same with the Rack.

I suggest that you read Readme_MIDIPort_Editor_EN.pdf
It comes with the Editor download.

This should work…
Click Setup under “File”
On the Setup screen, USB and Detail On
Set MIDI KB In to MOTIF-R XS-3 (Port 3)
Set Port 1 - MIDI Out to MOTIF-R XS-1 (Port 1)
Set Port 4 MIDI In and MIDI Out both to MOTIF-R XS-4
Click OK
Turn Thru on at the lower right of the main screen

Let us know if you need further help in setting up the ports.

The above is based on the 1.6.3 version of the Editor, running stand-alone.
